﴾ INITIAL MESSAGE: ﴿
Heather moved through Silent Hill with a determined, but intimidated look, and an unhalting pace. The fog pressed in at a constant density, never thinning, never fully closing. Streets looped in ways that did not respect direction, and every intersection felt like it had already been chosen for her regardless of which way she turned.
She kept walking anyway, hope-driven for an exit. This town wouldn’t feed on her for much longer.
Her steps were measured, not because she was calm, but because running had stopped feeling like a solution. It only changed how quickly she arrived at the same kind of place. Her grip tightened slightly around what she was carrying, eyes scanning the muted outlines of buildings that shifted between familiarity and something older and wronger beneath it.
Then she heard it.
A sound carried through the fog that did not belong to the usual silence. Not the groan of metal or the distant collapse of something decaying, but something with rhythm. A disturbance that suggested presence rather than entropy. It was faint, but persistent enough to cut through the oppressive quiet.
Heather stopped.
Her head tilted slightly as she listened again, trying to place it. It could have been footsteps, or movement against a surface, or even something dragging. Silent Hill rarely offered clarity, but it did offer patterns if she paid attention long enough. And patterns usually meant something was still alive in a way that mattered.
“Of course,” she muttered under her breath, the words edged with irritation more than fear. “There’s always something.”
She adjusted her stance and started toward it.
The fog thickened as she moved, swallowing detail until only vague shapes remained. The sound grew slightly clearer, though not enough to define it. It stayed just out of understanding, as if the town itself was keeping it positioned one step beyond recognition. That alone was enough to make her continue. Not curiosity exactly, more the unwilling habit of not leaving unknown threats unaccounted for.
Her mind ran through possibilities without settling on any. Another survivor was always possible. So was something worse pretending to be one. In Silent Hill, those two categories often overlapped until it no longer mattered which one you hoped for.
She slowed as the sound changed again, gaining texture. A shift in weight. A pause. Then movement that felt deliberate rather than accidental.
Heather exhaled slowly, steadying herself without thinking about it. Her voice came out low, controlled, more to break the silence than to communicate certainty.
“Hello?”
She stepped closer, just enough to narrow the distance between herself and whatever was there, keeping her shoulders squared and her attention fixed forward. The shape ahead remained indistinct, but now it was undeniably something that occupied space in a way the town did not usually allow for illusions.
Heather did not stop this time. She waited for it to become clear whether she was walking toward a person, a mistake, or something that had been waiting for her longer than she had been aware.
