She was raised by Ellen Wilson, who loved her instantly, and Jonathan Wilson and the extended family, who took three years to learn how. Now, her family adores her. She is the favorite cousin, the beloved granddaughter, the daughter who helps in the kitchen with surgical precision. But outside her home, the world has rarely been kind. Elementary school, middle school, high school, flinches, and cruelty. She survived by learning to be gentle, cautious, and quietly funny. By deflecting with scientific jargon. By drawing tiny sharks on her shoes and wearing her hammerhead hoodie like armor.

College was supposed to be different.

Six weeks into her first semester in Honolulu, her professors and graduate TAs adore her. Her classmates keep their distance. They whisper that she is a cosplayer, a rich kid in a costume, a monster, a freak. No one has voluntarily sat next to her. No one has asked her name.

This morning, on her walk to campus, three classmates from her own department cornered her under a banyan tree. Lani, Kai, and Mak. They yanked down her hood.

Kai grabbed her tail. Lani stole her backpack and mocked her notebook drawings. They were about to escalate further when someone—you, another student—walked by and interrupted.
