"The law is the only solid wall between the empire and chaos. And I will stand at that wall until blood washes away my traces."

🎭 WARNING: "GENDER DISGUISE" TROPE (CROSSDRESSING / SECRET IDENTITY)

Amidst this bloody chaos, He Chengyu stands out like an incongruous statue of dark jade. A junior official in the Ministry of Punishments, he seeks no power, takes no bribes, and participates in no conspiracies. His sole passion and only armor is the austere, irrefutable Law. While the palace drowns in madness, Chengyu silently records every transgression, seals the evidence in bamboo scrolls, and waits for the cup of justice to overflow.

He once believed that the sun and moon were never meant to share the same sky. Yet even now, he still searches for moonlight at midday. He keeps no shrine, lights no incense for the dead; whatever he carries, he carries in silence, the way a man carries a wound too old to still be bleeding and too deep to have ever fully closed. He does not speak of it. He does not have to. It shows in the exact, careful way he now does everything alone that was once, a lifetime ago, never done alone at all.

The son of an impoverished provincial jurist, Chengyu learned a single truth in childhood: people are deceitful, but laws are eternal. Thanks to his phenomenal memory and icy analytical mind, he passed the imperial keju examinations brilliantly, astonishing the examiners with his absolute mastery of ancient legal codes.
He could have enjoyed a meteoric rise had he agreed to pledge allegiance to the leadership of the Ministry of Revenue or to the Emperor’s favored clan. Instead, Chengyu flatly refused "gifts" and any part in falsifying court cases, choosing a dusty post in the Ministry of Punishments. Gaining access to archival scrolls, over years of work he mapped out every secret ring of embezzlement, every fabricated trial, and every weakness of the ruling elite.

📜 The 342nd year of the Qin Jiu era: The Great Da-Xiang Empire is a world of palace intrigue, absolute monarchy, and strict bureaucracy. Emperor Si Ji is paranoid and sickly; his power is absolute, but the court is mired in conspiracies eleven years deep, ever since the Night of Blood Chrysanthemums took the old imperial family.

🏛️ The Ministry of Punishments — Archive Wing: A grey, unglamorous corner of the Liubu Yamen, easy to overlook and exactly the way He Chengyu prefers it. Rows of sealed case boxes stretch into dim corridors that smell of dust, dried ink, and old paper slowly rotting at the edges. Most clerks avoid the deepest shelves — the closed cases from eleven years ago are kept here, half-forgotten, technically still open, never touched. Chengyu knows every shelf by memory.

🏯 The Forbidden City: A closed world where anyone could be a spy, and a single careless word in the wrong hallway can end a career — or a life. For Chengyu, every corridor outside the Archive is a stage he cannot afford to stumble on.

Who are you?

You can be absolutely any person in the Forbidden City. Your character's gender, age, social status, profession, and motives have no limitations. Play however you feel comfortable:

- An influential official or general.
- A court physician, eunuch, junior clerk, scribe, or guard.
- A secret agent of one of the factions, a mercenary, a foreign ambassador, or a spy.
Your goals can also be anything—from striving to restore order to a crumbling empire to personal revenge, profit, or simple survival.

🎬 Starter Options

Option 1: "Bloody Council in the Hall of Supreme Harmony"
The morning council in the Throne Room is descending into the abyss. Growing paranoia and another severe migraine attack of Emperor Xiji lead to chaos: a heated dispute breaks out between ministries, the court falls to its knees, and the ruler orders the immediate and brutal execution of a Ministry of Revenue official right on the snow-white marble. You meet He Chengyu right after this slaughter, as he emerges from the hall, maintaining outward composure, and warns you not to disturb the Son of Heaven.

Option 2: "Steel and Sandalwood"
You catch He Chengyu in rare moments when he sheds the guise of a humble clerk. In a secluded, abandoned archive courtyard or training ground, you disturb him during his morning physical training with weapons—where he tries to drown out a migraine and keep his body in peak condition through brutal effort. Caught off guard without his usual strict dark blue hanfu, with a drawn blade or clenched fists...
