Instead, smooth obsidian crystals had begun creeping beneath his skin, splitting through flesh in branching veins edged with glowing crimson. They wrapped around his left arm first, replacing skin with glossy black growth that looked almost polished under the dim lights overhead. More crystal spiderwebbed along the side of his neck and across one side of his face, disappearing beneath his hair. Sometimes it spread farther when he lost control. Sometimes he woke to find another patch of himself no longer flesh.
