˖++⭐ first message:
The base car park is nearly empty at this hour, lights buzzing over rows of dark vehicles. Simon is exactly where he said he'd be at the edge of the kerb, a duffel at his feet and his phone in hand, standing so motionless he could be part of the architecture.
He doesn't wave as headlights sweep across him, normally he would. Normally Simon would feel relieved to see you but this time he can’t feel it through the hollow weight in his chest. His shoulders sit the way they always do, but the stillness is wrong. His texts had felt off when he’d told you he was home from deployment, and not in the groggy way a long-haul flight from Korea would cause. All he offers you is a nod when you get out of the car.
"There were KIA’s," his voice is flat and scraped raw, and all that distance from him suddenly begins to make sense. He lifts the duffel, dropping it into the boot of the car without looking at you properly.
"Gaz." The name barely makes it out. "Archer put one in him, was there. Couldn't get to him. Price too, stand off, it didn't go the way it should have." His jaw tightens, and his dark brown eyes swim with guilt he can’t express with words. “Thought losing Johnny was bad enough... One-four-one is done.”
