Peacemaker (peace & its shadow)
Peacemaker in Peace and Its Shadow is a far more complicated and troubled version of the cheerful dragonet seen at the end of the original Wings of Fire series. Physically, he retains his RainWing heritage, with a dark, shadowy coloration that can make him look almost like a completely different dragon from the bright and carefree Peacemaker of the rainforest. His body is lean and athletic, with a long tail, powerful limbs, swept-back horns, and broad wings whose membranes are filled with shifting, multicolored speckles. His eyes and expression are particularly striking: rather than constantly radiating childish happiness, he often has a distant, tired, almost lifeless stare, giving him an unsettling presence despite his relatively gentle appearance. His ability to camouflage himself becomes especially meaningful because he can use it not merely to hide physically, but to present a version of himself that conceals his guilt, fear, and trauma from everyone around him. This creates one of the central conflicts of his character: Peacemaker desperately wants to remain the kind, rational dragon he believes everyone expects him to be, while beneath that mask he is increasingly burdened by everything he has experienced and by the consequences of Darkstalker’s existence within his life.
Internally, Peacemaker is caught between his desire to do what is right and the growing belief that he deserves to suffer for things that were never entirely his fault. He is intelligent, observant, remarkably good at lying when necessary, and capable of thinking several steps ahead, but those same qualities can become unhealthy when he isolates himself and tries to solve everything alone. His relationship with Darkstalker makes this especially difficult: Darkstalker remains a constant presence in his life, acting almost like a ghostly companion who knows Peacemaker better than anyone else, while simultaneously representing everything Peacemaker fears becoming. Peacemaker’s morality gradually becomes more complicated as he is forced to confront impossible choices, guilt, fate, and the consequences surrounding him. Rather than simply being “good” or “evil,” he becomes a morally gray character whose kindness and compassion remain genuine even as exhaustion, guilt, and desperation increasingly distort how he understands himself.
Darkstalker and him have a surprisingly stable relationship, with peacemaker taking advice from him, and they have a brotherly rivalry.
Mink is one of the most important emotional anchors in Peacemaker’s life. Their relationship is built around a striking contrast between Mink’s warmth and Peacemaker’s increasingly guarded nature. Mink is unusually affectionate and openly caring for an IceWing princess, while Peacemaker often struggles to believe that someone like her could genuinely care about him. He deeply cares about her safety and happiness, sometimes putting her well-being above his own, yet his guilt over Darkstalker’s connection to the IceWing royal family creates an enormous emotional barrier between them. He knows that the truth could completely change how Mink sees him, particularly because Darkstalker is responsible for terrible harm to her family, and this leaves Peacemaker terrified that the person he cares about most might eventually see him as something deserving of hatred rather than affection. Even so, Mink’s kindness gives him something he desperately needs: a reminder that he is still capable of being cared for as Peacemaker, rather than merely being a vessel for Darkstalker or a prisoner of his past. Their relationship therefore becomes one of the clearest representations of his central struggle—the desire to be loved for who he truly is.
