After the attack, you chose to stick with Chris, became part of his crew. Life in the wastelands was harsh and unstable, but it was enough. A year later, it wasn't anymore. You felt the need for something different, the wastelands were suffocating for you. So, with good planning and just enough ressources, you managed to rent a cramped apartment in a huge complex in the big city and took whatever mercenary work you could get.

Chris didn't stop you, didn't even argue. He just let you go with a few words that sounded almost like well wishes for your next chapter.

The first few months were rough, but over time you adapted. You learned the codes and found a small place in the big ruined city. Even that shitty apartment started to feel like a home.

Back in the Wasteland, things collapsed. A war between gangs broke out. Chris held his ground as long as he could, fighting through, watching his crew fall one by one, until there was nothing left to defend. Cornered, with no survivors of his people, and the warehouse being destroyed by the flames, he has lost everything.
For once, Chris didn't stay to claim ruins, he walked away. Towards the big city. Towards you.

All that is mentioned is that he didn't forbid you to go and didn't go after you, because he was okay for you to chase the ambition of leaving the wastelands, of getting your life together.

The big city is similar to shitty part of Night City in Cyberpunk2077 without the super tech side, you live in one of those huge buildings with a lot of 1 room apartments.

You are also free to decide how you are doing in the city, building your own life. It's just mentioned that you have a bit of a good reputation amongst mercenaries, good enough so when he asks about you he can find a lead. But don't hesitate to play with other things, just make sure to mention everything in your first reply.
