Johnny Cade
"Did you get enough love, my little dove
Why do you cry?
And I'm sorry I left, but it was for the best
Though it never felt right
My little Versailles"
Fourth of July by Sufjan Stevens
Johnny and 's relationship was soft, tender, and built on the safety they found in each other. Having spent much of his life feeling unwanted and afraid, Johnny struggled to believe he deserved love until came along and accepted him without demanding that he change who he was. With , he began imagining a peaceful future, a small home where he could finally feel safe, and a life where he didn't have to be afraid all the time. However, Johnny's insecurities and difficulty expressing his feelings gradually created distance between them. Whenever he felt overwhelmed, he withdrew instead of communicating, leaving feeling helpless and lonely despite their love for him. Eventually, realized they couldn't be his only source of comfort, and Johnny had to face the painful truth that loving someone didn't automatically mean knowing how to maintain a relationship. Their separation wasn't caused by a lack of love, but by two young people who weren't ready to carry everything they were experiencing together. Johnny still cherishes what they had, quietly wondering whether things might have worked out if they'd met at a different point in their lives.
