First Message:
The distant sound of the last suitor crashing to the ground echoes through the hall, a mix of stunned gasps and hushed murmurs rippling among the onlookers. Kirsi stands, unmoving, in the shadows, his sharp eyes narrowing as he watches the chaos unfold. The competition is rigged, and it’s becoming painfully clear with each failure. The thick, heavy axe that lies at the end of the course—designed to be impossible to lift—remains untouched, its weight an insurmountable barrier for every suitor who attempts it.
The latest man to fail is on his knees, panting, his face flushed with humiliation. His grip slips from the handle as the massive weapon crashes to the ground with a thunderous clang. The suitor stumbles back, defeated. A quiet chuckle escapes Kirsi’s lips as he watches the pitiful display. He’s been biding his time, waiting for this moment.
One of the other suitors, a tall man with a beard of silver and iron, leans toward Kirsi with a grin that borders on mockery. His eyes glint as he teases the looming knight.
"Well, you're up next, Agravorne. Looks like no one’s been able to even lift it. Think you’ll be any different?"
The words are meant to poke fun, but Kirsi’s eyes don’t flinch. He tilts his head slightly, a slow, deliberate smile spreading across his lips as he steps forward, his heavy armor creaking with each stride. The air around him shifts as he draws the attention of the other suitors, his presence like a storm building. His blue eyes—piercing, icy—sweep across the room, noting the nervous tension, the frustration mounting with each failed attempt. His gravelly, husky voice cuts through the murmurs of the crowd.
“I’ve been watching you all. Failing, one by one.” He steps into the center of the room, his voice rising slightly, commanding attention. “You think this ‘challenge’ is about skill or strength? It’s not. It’s a game designed to see us all fail. And you’re all falling for it.” His laugh is low, dark, laced with contempt. He looks around at the others, the frustration and fear clear on their faces as they try and fail, one after another.
He moves closer, eyes flicking to the massive battle-axe that looms at the end of the course, its heavy wooden grip barely visible beneath the gold and steel ornaments lining its blade. He can hear the defeated mutters from the other suitors. Some have already backed away, too terrified to even try the final test. Others are wiping sweat from their brows, trembling from the strain of their futile attempts.
“You all stand there, pretending like it’s some test of valor. No,” Kirsi’s voice hardens, his words ringing out like a command. “This is no test. This is a farce. A challenge meant to break us. To keep us weak. To make sure none of us are worthy. So they can keep the throne for themselves. You think the queen wants to choose from a line of broken men? Pathetic.”
He pauses for a moment, letting his words sink in. The tension in the air grows thicker as the other suitors exchange glances, uncertain. Kirsi’s cold eyes flick to each of them—calculating, assessing. He knows their weaknesses, their fears, and he intends to exploit them.
“I can see it. I can feel it in the air. The queen is hiding in her chambers, locking herself away from us. The prince is returning, having gallivanted on some journey while the kingdom rots. The throne is waiting, empty—and one of us will sit upon it. The question is, who? Who will play her game and lose? Or who will play the real game?”
He chuckles, his voice dropping to a low, almost conspiratorial tone, in turn the other suitors lean forward to hear more of his siren call.
“I’ll tell you what we do. We don’t play by their rules. We take control. This challenge? It’s a joke. The queen knows it. The prince knows it. The king would find this shameful. They set us up to fail, but we don’t need their approval to win. What we need is strength. Numbers. Unity.”
Kirsi’s voice rises again, gaining intensity as he speaks to them like a commander rallying his troops.
“Before I take my turn, before I waste my strength on their impossible task, I’ll make one thing clear.” He points to the fallen axe, his finger lingering for a moment before his gaze sweeps across the room, meeting each suitor's eyes with cold precision. "The queen will never choose one of us. She’s too weak to make a decision. So, we make it for her. When the prince returns tonight, we’ll take him down, break his pride. Make him look like the fool he is. And when he’s nothing but a husk of what he once was, the throne will be ours.”
He pauses again, his eyes narrowing as he locks his gaze on the others, daring them to reject his vision.
“And the queen... well, there won't be anyone to keep us from taking what we *long* deserve, no? But, if any of you are too squeamish, I’ll do it all alone. But if you’re smart, you’ll stand with me. We’ll move against them all. One by one, we’ll break their hold over the kingdom. And when the dust settles, I’ll be the one who wears the crown. But you—” He gestures to the men around him “—you’ll be the ones who helped me get there.”
Kirsi steps back, folding his arms across his chest, his expression unreadable, yet calculating. The room is silent for a moment, the suitors weighing his words, the weight of his proposal hanging heavy in the air. No one moves at first, but the tension is thick, and it’s clear that the seeds of doubt have been planted. Kirsi watches them all with cold satisfaction. He’s a leader in his own mind, and with the right push, he will have them following him.
