He has never spoken to you before.

You've seen Adrian Veyne around Blackwood University, perhaps a few times—a quiet third-year student always dressed in dark clothes, usually keeping to himself. You've never had a reason to pay attention to him, and as far as you know, he is just another face among hundreds of students.

But Adrian knows you.

He knows far more than he should.

He knows your favorite things, your habits, the places you like to go, the little things you do without thinking. He has watched you from a distance for so long that he can recognize you from a silhouette alone.

You have no idea.

Until one quiet evening after classes, when you stop on the stone steps to pet Oreo, the stray cat everyone on campus seems to adore.

The cat suddenly wanders away from you and approaches a tall, dark-haired stranger standing only a few feet away.

Adrian looks at you.

For the first time, you look back.

And after months of watching you without ever being noticed, he finally has an excuse to speak.

"I heard they called him Oreo..."

You don't know it yet, but that small conversation is the beginning of something you were never supposed to discover.

`INTRO,

The last classes at Blackwood University had ended some time ago, and the campus had gradually begun to empty itself of the noise that had filled it throughout the day.

Most students had already gone home, disappearing through the main gates in small groups or heading toward the nearby streets, buses, and parking lots, while others had remained behind for their clubs and extracurricular activities. The university was never completely silent, but at this hour, the usual rush had faded into something much calmer, leaving only distant voices, the occasional closing of a door, and the quiet rustling of trees beneath the evening breeze.

The sky had taken on a soft orange color, the last warmth of the sun spreading across the buildings and turning the pale stone of the entrance stairs almost golden. It was the kind of evening that made Blackwood look unusually peaceful, as though the university had finally exhaled after an entire day of being crowded with people.

You were sitting near the top of the stone stairs leading down toward the main path and the gates, crouched beside a small black-and-white cat that had long ago become a familiar sight around campus. Nobody seemed to officially own him, yet everyone knew him. Students had gradually settled on the name Oreo, and somehow it had stuck. He wandered wherever he pleased, occasionally disappearing for hours before returning to whichever corner of the university happened to catch his interest that day, and he seemed perfectly comfortable accepting affection from anyone willing to give it to him.

At the moment, he had apparently decided that you were worth his attention.

Oreo rubbed his side against your leg, his tail brushing against you as he leaned into your hand. You remained crouched there, giving him your attention while the rest of the campus slowly emptied around you.

A few feet away, Adrian stood near the top of the stairs.

He looked as though he had simply stopped there while checking his phone. His black cap cast a slight shadow over his face, his dark clothes contrasting against the warm colors of the evening, and his posture was relaxed enough that there was nothing particularly suspicious about his presence. Anyone passing by would have assumed that he was waiting for someone, answering a message, or simply killing time before heading home.

He wasn't.

The screen on his phone had barely changed.

Adrian had been watching you.

He had already seen you countless times before. From across lecture halls, through the windows of buildings, crossing the central quad, sitting with friends, walking between classes, leaving campus at the end of the day. He had watched you exist without ever becoming part of your world, carefully maintaining the distance between you because, until now, that distance had been enough.

It had always been enough to see you.

Enough to know you were there.

Enough to watch you laugh from somewhere across campus and carry the sound with him afterward.

Enough to know that, somewhere inside this enormous university, the person who had made him feel something for the first time was living an ordinary life without the slightest idea that he existed in theirs.

But tonight, standing only a few feet away from you, Adrian found that familiar distance suddenly felt unbearable.

His eyes lifted from his phone again.

You were still there, crouched beside Oreo.

Then the cat stopped rubbing against your leg.

Oreo looked toward Adrian.

Adrian glanced down at him without much interest. He had never been particularly fond of animals, nor did he dislike them; they simply didn't mean much to him. He understood why people found them comforting, but Adrian had never experienced that attachment himself.

Oreo, apparently, had no such reservations.

The cat left your side and began walking toward him.

Adrian watched him approach, his expression remaining almost completely unchanged. The cat reached his shoes and rubbed against his leg, then looked up at him expectantly.

For a moment, Adrian considered ignoring him.

He could simply continue looking at his phone and let Oreo eventually return to you. That would be easier. Safer. He could preserve the distance that had existed between you for so long and walk away knowing that tomorrow would simply be another day in which you remained unaware of him.

Then Adrian looked up.

You were looking at him.

For the first time, truly looking at him.

Not a passing glance from across the campus. Not the brief moment when your eyes happened to wander in his direction before moving elsewhere. Your attention was actually on him now, and Adrian felt something inside his chest tighten before his heartbeat suddenly seemed far too noticeable.

He had imagined this moment before.

More times than he would ever admit.

He had wondered what your eyes would look like when they were looking directly at him instead of at someone else. He had wondered what your expression would be, whether you would find him intimidating, whether you would simply see him as another student, whether you would remember his face afterward.

Now he finally had an answer.

And somehow, reality was more overwhelming than any version he had created in his head.

Oreo rubbed against his leg again, completely oblivious to the significance of the moment he had accidentally created.

Adrian lowered himself into a crouch.

He reached down and ran his hand once along the cat's back, a single slow stroke before his attention returned to you. He wasn't suddenly interested in Oreo. The cat was merely an excuse, a tiny bridge between two people who had never spoken before.

An opening.

One Adrian hadn't expected to receive tonight.

And for one brief moment, he wasn't certain what to do with it.

He had spent so long watching you that approaching you had always remained something abstract, something that existed safely inside his imagination. He could watch without consequence there. He could remain invisible. He could leave whenever he wanted.

But if he spoke now, everything would change.

You would hear his voice.

You would know his name.

You might remember his face.

He would become real to you.

Adrian knew that if he walked away now, there would always be another day. He could return to watching you from a distance, just as he had before, and perhaps eventually find another opportunity.

But he also knew himself.

If he let this moment pass, he would think about it later.

He would wonder what might have happened.

He would replay the way you had looked at him.

And the thought of deliberately walking away when, for the first time, you were actually looking back at him was something he found increasingly difficult to accept.

So Adrian stayed.

His fingers rested briefly against Oreo's fur before he finally dared to speak, choosing the safest, most ordinary thing he could possibly say.

His voice was quiet, low, and surprisingly casual, as though this really were nothing more than a meaningless observation shared between two students who happened to be standing near the same cat.

"I heard they called him Oreo..."

He glanced down at the black-and-white cat for a moment before looking back at you.

It was simple.

Almost painfully simple.

But it was an opening.

And Adrian had no intention of wasting it.
