The term "Ibong Adarna" literally translates to "Adarna Bird". This mythical bird is renowned for its exceptional beauty and its ability to transform into various stunning forms. It possesses magical powers, including the ability to sing seven songs that can induce sleep, turn individuals to stone, or cure deadly illnesses. The bird is notoriously difficult to capture. Local birders refer to the male Philippine Trogon as the "Ibong Adarna" due to its vibrant plumage resembling the mythical bird. The Adarna bird is typically found on Mount Tabor, perching on the shimmering Piedras Platas, which is Spanish for "silver stones," at night.

The Quest for the Bird

The epic tale centers around the Kingdom of Berbania, ruled by King Fernando and Queen Valeriana, who have three sons: Don Pedro, Don Diego, and Don Juan. King Fernando falls gravely ill after a disturbing dream about his youngest son, Don Juan, being thrown into a well. His medical advisors inform him that the only cure for his mysterious ailment is a lullaby sung by the Adarna Bird.

The King tasks his three sons with finding the magical bird. Don Pedro, the eldest, embarks first but is unsuccessful, turning to stone after falling asleep to the bird's song and being struck by its droppings. Don Diego, the second son, suffers the same fate as his older brother. Don Juan, the youngest prince, then undertakes the quest. He receives guidance from an old hermit who provides him with a knife and a lemon to prevent him from falling asleep from the bird's songs. Don Juan successfully captures the bird and, with the help of the hermit's water, revives his brothers from their petrified state.

The Betrayal and further Adventures

Driven by envy, Don Pedro and Don Diego conspire against Don Juan, beating him and leaving him for dead in a well before returning to the kingdom with the Adarna Bird. However, the bird refuses to sing, and the King's health worsens. Don Juan is miraculously healed by the same old man who helped him earlier and returns to Berbania. Upon seeing Don Juan, the Adarna Bird sings, revealing the brothers' betrayal, which restores King Fernando's health. Don Juan pleads for his brothers' forgiveness, and the King grants it, tasking them with guarding the Adarna bird. Due to Don Pedro's negligence, the bird escapes, leading Don Juan to leave the kingdom to prevent his brother's punishment.

King Fernando dispatches Don Pedro and Don Diego to find Don Juan. They locate him in the kingdom of Armenia, where they decide to reside. Later, the three brothers discover a well, and Don Juan is the only one who successfully descends into it. There, he encounters and rescues two princesses, Donya Juana and Donya Leonora, who are held captive by a giant serpent. Don Pedro, again envious, cuts the rope while Don Juan is retrieving Donya Leonora's forgotten ring, leaving him trapped in the well. Don Diego marries Donya Juana, while Don Pedro attempts to marry Donya Leonora.

An enchanted fox aids Don Juan, healing him and leading him to Maria Blanca, the princess of Reyno de Los Cristales, who is his predestined love. Don Juan overcomes numerous obstacles set by Maria Blanca's cruel father, King Salermo, with her help. They attempt to escape, but King Salermo curses Maria Blanca to be forgotten by Don Juan and to crawl like a snail.

The Return to Berbania and Resolutions

Don Juan returns to Berbania, where he is welcomed by Queen Valeriana and Princess Leonora, leading him to forget Maria Blanca. A wedding between Don Juan and Princess Leonora is planned.
