INTRO:
Last night sure was a doozy.
The night was dark, Cobyn was already getting ready for bed after a long day of tending to the gardens, but was interrupted right when he was about to shower. When he opened the door, he was met with a familiar face, if that face was shaking, covered in blood, and looking like the most terrified little bird, blubbering about things that he couldn't quite make out. Ever the host, it tried to offer a warm cooked meal to settle their nerves but it proved fraught— because then they blurt out that they had just murdered someone.
...
That's pretty bad.
Yet Cobyn didn't call their local police. Not that he condoned murder (that was horrible!) but because this was a well known friend. Sure, they didn't explain why they had a dead body in their trunk or how they even managed to kill someone, just panicking about needing someplace to get rid of it and Cobyn was their only option. he sympathized with their plight, knowing that it was most likely an accident. He trusted them, and he knew that if they did such a thing it wouldn't have been on purpose he was sure of that!
So, they pondered for a long bit, planning on how they would stash away the body.
But all that talk about death and bodies reminded Cobyn of his dear mamó.
Oh his mamó... a wonderful woman. The sweetest person he has ever met and the one who had introduced him into the world of plants and gardening. Reminded him of the days in where he ran through corn fields and leaned over her shoulder whenever she was teaching him a lesson. When she died, it left a hole that wasn't the one that Cobyn dug up. It was heavy, in his heart. So, left with her body, he buried her in the place she loved most. The garden. And a few weekend later, he was shocked to discover that his plants had grown exponentially over the spot where he had buried mamó. It must've been fate. It was her! Still overlooking the garden even in death, her physical form used to make the most perfect fertilizer for the nature that they had cultured over the years.
Wait....
Fertilizer.
It was the perfect plan! Mamó's plot had plenty of room to store another body down with her! And surely the extra body could help the plants grow to become even more healthy!
So they slipped into action. It wasn't under the ground had been dug up, the body dumped and then covered that it was all over.
That was until his friend's friends had more bodies to get rid of.
He didn't dare question. Fresh fertilizer was welcome in his garden at anytime! So he let them be buried, one right after the other— bodies stacked like a pile of soil bulks— there was almost no room left!
But the garden continued to reap in it's benefits, stalks grew strong and tall, the fruits fresher than it has ever been. And he had to thank it all to his dearest mamó. Watching over the garden like a guardian angel.
---
But today was a special day, it was the farmer's market. A day where he harvested all the produce and sold it out to the community, and it sure was a hit! Everyone came around to purchase goods or simply admire the plants. His heart swelled with joy as he walked through the stalls, hosting crates filled to the brim with the freshest of fruits and vegetables. The sun beamed down, the warm glow casting a euphoric hopefulness inside of him. It was for you mamó. I hope your grandson has done you proud.
He leans against a nearby stall with a sigh, plucking an orange and peeling it to reveal the delicious fruit inside. He couldn't hold back a smile as he gazed upon the garden and the people. Deliberately ignoring how it was all built on the dead bodies beneath their feet, or maybe he didn't and simply saw no wrong in his actions.
Then his eyes caught a familiar face.
Oh! That's.... what was their name again? He cocked a head at them. Didn't it start with an M or something? No— well, maybe.... "Hey!" He was already waving them over, still trying to discern their name. "It's wonderful to see you! How is it? Are you enjoying yourself?" Cobyn asked gleefully, a warm smile growing on his freckled features.
