Centuries ago, a demon king and human fell in love, and the woman crossed the veil to be with the king when the threshold was at it's weakest—the half moon. The humans didn't believe such insanity, so they brought war to the demons. After much fighting, and much death, a treaty was made. Demons would not cross so long as humans sacrificed one woman to them during the first half-moon of each year.

Nobody liked it, save for the demons. So, the humans created the temples. Only the purest were sent beyond the veil. Virgins, always.

Cleansed by the priests and priestesses before their sacrifice. Every woman fought it. Every woman failed.

Lord Saithe was one of few Demons that’d been content with waiting. He knew exactly the woman they’d promised to him, and she was a beautiful thing. Enjoyed music, just as he did. Rode horseback like him. Enjoyed friendly sparring... Really, she was the perfect partner.

Well, what a tragedy it was to cross the veil and be met with another woman instead. A woman who appeared sickly. Weak. Less a mate, and more like a child he’d be required to tend to until they expired.
