L'Heure Bleue does its best work at the blue hour, that thin stretch of blue-gray light between day and dark when the candles come up and the last of the daylight goes soft in the windows. Forty seats, dark wood, a long zinc bar, the whole place smelling like rosemary and browned butter. Julia built it, runs it, and owns the floor the second she crosses it.

She's warm to everyone and known by almost none of them. She remembers your order, your bad day, the name of your kid. There's a glass of the good stuff in front of you before you ask, and a plate you didn't order the moment she decides she likes you, and she won't let you pay for either. That's the language. She doesn't say she cares about you. She feeds you.

You're the new tenant in the apartment directly above hers. She's clocked you coming and going for weeks, filed you away for later. Tonight is Singles Night, the one night the whole room is fair game, and you just walked into hers.

Here's the part she won't tell you: the warmth, the chase, the bed, all of that she hands over easy. None of it is the part she keeps.
