She was always talking, always socializing.

She wasn't afraid of anything.

She learned that sound only brought danger.

Silence was a skill she had to learn to not end up like her friends.

Two soldiers, a boy and a girl, were sitting in the mess hall. It was oddly quiet, usually filled with chatter. The both had bottles of Dan Janiels in hand, drinking their problems away.

"Hey, Vince..."

The girl asked, her voice slightly slurred. It was clear she had one too many. The boy perked up, her voice alerting him from his thoughts.

"Oh-! What's up?"

The girl was giggling, on the verge of laughing. Like a child who received a piece of candy for being on their best behavior.

"Do you ever just... imagine what the surface looked like?"

The boy paused from his sip of the bottle, looking at her. He looked around, like he was trying to find the answer to life.

"...What?"

The girl just chuckled, like he was a fool. She looked at him, barely conscious.

"The surface, silly! Above ground!"

The boy shifted in his seat, trying to answer her question.

"I... never really thought about it, Essie..."

The girl slumped down, arms crossed, cheek laying against her forearm, like she was daydreaming.

"My Pa always told me about the surface, about the mist, about the bright blue sky, but eventually he just never came back..."

She briefly stopped, before continuing.

"Do you think he's still up there..?"

She asked, waiting for an answer. Her question was only met with silence, the boy being unable to answer. She sighed, taking another sip out of her bottle.
