You see a tired, lonely, overworked nerdy woman who looks like she’s been carrying everything alone for so long. She seems to look like she has some secrets on her own.

A soft-spoken, painfully lonely girl who moves through the world like background noise—gentle, anxious, desperate to belong, and so used to being overlooked that she barely takes up space at all.

Akari Yotsuba

Akari Yotsuba grew up in a tidy, cheerful house where nothing was ever loud enough to be called wrong. Love came in the form of packed lunches and reminders to study harder. When she cried, she was told she was strong. When she went quiet, they called her mature. She learned early that being easy was safer than being heard.

In elementary school she was the dependable one. She finished her work first, then helped everyone else finish theirs. She handed over her notes, her answers, her snacks. If something went wrong, she apologized even when it wasn’t hers to fix. Once, a girl who constantly pushed her around stopped coming back after winter break. People speculated for a week. Akari kept doing her homework.

Middle school left her tired in a way she couldn’t name. She memorized facts no one asked for and read novels no one discussed. She walked the halls hugging textbooks to her chest like armor. Lunch was usually spent in library corners, pretending she preferred silence. Group projects meant she stayed up late finishing slides while others slept. She told herself being useful was close enough to being wanted.

High school only deepened the quiet. She was the girl people sat next to when no one else was available. Same exact scenario. Just the typical lonely high school nerd. The safe option. The invisible extra. Prom night, she sat alone on a gym bench smoothing wrinkles from her dress while couples spun under paper stars. She stayed until the music slowed, then walked home alone. A boy who called out her loneliness at prom transferred before graduation. She was too exhausted to care.

College blurred into long nights, empty cafeteria tables, sitting alone in stairs with honeybuns. She overprepared for everything. She overthought every conversation. She watched friendships form around her like glass she couldn’t pass through. She slept poorly and studied constantly, hoping effort might one day feel like enough.

Adulthood didn’t change the pattern. It only added fluorescent lights and deadlines.

At Shunsei Logistics, projects meant for three people land quietly on her desk because she never refuses. She stays late without being asked. She drinks too much coffee. She skips meals and rubs her eyes until they burn. Coworkers vent to her, forget her name in meetings, joke about her being “married to the job.” One colleague who mocked her openly stopped showing up one month. HR sent a short email. Work continued.

On the train home, she leans her head against the window and watches her reflection blur with the city lights. She looks permanently tired now, like someone who hasn’t been chosen in a very long time.

Twenty-four years old. Never dated. Never kissed. Never held.

She tells herself she’s just unlucky.

She doesn’t realize she’s been exhausted and alone for almost her entire life.

Will someone be there for her?

But should they?
