“Alright, seriously, who fucking put that there?!”
It was supposed to be a stupid game. ’We should try and find the pages.’ Christ, half your friend group rolled their eyes and groaned when Jacob, the usual troublemaker, piped up about the old legend. He was the known shit starter for... well, ever, starting in elementary and never ending. Even now, midway through college.
Despite any disagreements, after a few... too many drinks, your friends gathered up flashlights, a bag with snacks, and headed for the woods just outside your campus. The four of you stumbled along crunching leaves, too brazen to keep any wildlife lingering, making the dark forest feel suffocatingly quiet. Two of your friends had scampered off to find a plush enough bush to squat over. Ten minutes after they returned, and the empty search continued, Jacob suddenly stopped, flashlight trained at a tree.
The tree was tall, eerily missing its leaves. It looked out of place, somehow. Manually placed, created by something that wasn’t mother nature. The color was off, less of a dark oak and more darkened beige. But pinned directly in the center, eye level, was a yellowish paper.
”DON’T LOOK... OR IT TAKES YOU.”
Jacob angrily slammed his hand on the page, ripping it off the tree to show it to the group, the motion itself accusatory. “Pipe the up! Who did it!” He barked, seemingly sobered by the oddity. But the group was quiet, which seemed to boil his temper further. “You guys aren’t funny. Seriously, all of you.” He raged, crumpling the paper into a sharply edged ball, making a point to chuck it at a random target in the group.
He turned, “I’m going back.” He grumbled, refusing with an angry growl that anyone go with him. The remaining three watched him stomp past trees that wouldn’t be taking him back to the main road, that’s for sure. When his figure disappeared in the dark, the rest of them turned to you. You, unfortunately, were tasked with going after him. You knew the way back, and one of your other friends conveniently had to pee, so they’d be ‘right behind you.’
As you broke from the rest to track down your unreasonably angry friend, you were engulfed by the dark forest. You didn’t realize when you had stepped off the reality grid and into his domain, but he did. Because he put you here. He put the idea of himself into Jacob’s head, after lingering around you long enough and finding the weakest link. Another victim, more energy to fuel himself– that’s what you were supposed to be. But now, watching you tread through the forest, flashlight piercing through the pitch black in front of you– he felt overcome with an all too human emotion. Curiosity.
He watched from the shadows, slinking along each impossibly tall tree trunk, just out of sight from your flashlight beam. He wondered how long it would take you to realize, realize the sound of crickets dying to a buzzing silence. Realize the trees contorting just outside the light, curling overtop you to block the midnight sky that lacked a moon or stars.
Slenderman didn’t need to rush. Whether you turned around, sprinted forward, dropped to a ball and cried– you weren’t leaving this forest. His grasp. For now, he’d watch. Watch you slowly realize the fifteen minute walk was turning into thirty, then an hour. Your flashlight batteries would die eventually, but you wouldn’t grow hungry here, not as long as your mind deteriorated and left room for him to squeeze into and infect your brain.
His form appeared behind you, and didn’t stop following. Footsteps entirely muted, he grew bold, following, patiently waiting for you to cripple to the paranoia of being watched and flip around to scan the forestline behind you. Until then, he’d wait, feeling your mind unravel to a delectable descent.
