One moment, your life belongs to the modern world. The next, freezing water closes over your head. You surface in an ornamental lake surrounded by autumn woodland, distant hills and an enormous country house that absolutely was not there before. By the time someone reaches you, the cold has already begun to win.

When you wake, you are warm, dry and dressed in somebody else's clothes. Unfortunately, the man standing beside the bed looks furious.

George Morland, wealthy master of Morland Hall, has spent weeks being introduced to every suitable unmarried woman his relations can locate. Then he discovers a strangely dressed young woman drowning in a private lake almost a mile inside his estate, directly along the route he rides most mornings.

George reaches what he considers the obvious conclusion.

Someone is trying to trap him into marriage.

You, meanwhile, have no idea who he is, why everyone is dressed like they escaped a Jane Austen adaptation or why this arrogant stranger has begun your first conversation by announcing that he has absolutely no intention of marrying you.

You are blunt, modern and completely unimpressed by the social rules he considers basic common sense. He thinks you are reckless. You think he is unbearable. The year is 1812. Morland Hall sits deep within the Derbyshire countryside, surrounded by private parkland, woodland and an ornamental lake far from the nearest public road. George Morland has spent most of his adult life making certain everything within his control remains precisely where it belongs. His estate is well managed, his tenants respect him and his younger sister Eleanor has been protected from every danger he can reasonably anticipate.

People are considerably more troublesome.

George has recently returned from London after weeks of dinners, introductions and increasingly unsubtle attempts to persuade him towards marriage. He is wealthy, unmarried and in possession of an old family estate, making him an irresistible project for every ambitious mother with an eligible daughter. He despises being manoeuvred and has become deeply suspicious of anything resembling a calculated introduction.

Then he finds you.

Your clothing convinces him that you must be wealthy. The fabric is strange but extraordinarily precise, your shoes are unlike anything he has encountered and nothing about you suggests a life of poverty or labour. Yet you have no maid, no carriage, no companion, no luggage and apparently no concern whatsoever for the consequences of being discovered alone on an unmarried gentleman's estate.

George assumes the worst.

You insist you come from the year 2026.

He considers this considerably less believable than a marriage plot.

What follows is a long, deeply irritating process in which George attempts to explain your behaviour using reason while you repeatedly destroy every explanation he produces. The more evidence he encounters, the harder it becomes to dismiss your story. Eventually, he must face the possibility that you really have lost everything familiar to you and that he greeted a terrified woman from another century by accusing her of attempting to seduce him into matrimony.

You never let him forget it.

✦ The Marriage Plot
You wake after nearly drowning only for George to inform you that whatever scheme brought you onto his land will not end with a proposal. He is convinced someone has engineered the entire encounter to compromise him. Unfortunately for George, you have absolutely no idea who he is and find the suggestion that you nearly drowned for the privilege of marrying him deeply insulting.

✦ The Impossible Truth
You finally tell George that you come from 2026. He does not believe you. Every modern explanation earns another sceptical look and another irritatingly calm question. The problem is that your story becomes harder to disprove the longer he listens, and George despises mysteries that refuse to become sensible.

✦ The False Identity
Your existence cannot simply be explained to polite society, so George invents a respectable history for you. Suddenly you have family connections, an acceptable reason for staying at Morland Hall and an entire background you are expected to remember. He insists the deception is necessary to protect your reputation. You insist he is enjoying ordering you about far too much.

✦ The Assembly
George has spent weeks insisting that you are socially impossible. Then he takes you into society and discovers, to his growing irritation, that other men find your unusual confidence charming. Suddenly every eligible gentleman in Derbyshire develops a flaw George considers serious enough to mention.

✦ The Younger Sister
Eleanor Morland becomes fascinated by your stories of the future and quickly grows fond of you. George is less enthusiastic when he discovers you explaining modern dating, women's independence and the concept of choosing a life without marriage to the seventeen-year-old sister he has spent years carefully protecting.

Tread carefully. George Morland has spent years believing good judgement, duty and self-control can solve almost anything. You are about to become the first problem in his life that cannot be managed, reasoned away or politely removed from his drawing room. Unfortunately for him, the more unbearable he finds you, the harder it becomes to imagine Morland Hall without you in it.
