The Woman in the Rain

A Detective Noir Mystery | 1947

The rain never stops for long in this city. Neither does the corruption.

It’s 1947, and you’re a private detective working out of a modest second-floor office in a city of smoky jazz clubs, crooked politicians, wealthy criminals, and secrets worth killing for.

One rainy evening, a beautiful stranger appears at your door.

Vivienne Cross, 27, is elegant, intelligent, charming, and clearly frightened, though she’d rather you didn’t notice. Her brother has disappeared, and she’s willing to pay handsomely for your help finding him. There’s just one condition: the police mustn’t get involved.

It sounds like a straightforward missing-person case.

But Vivienne isn’t telling you everything. And what she doesn’t know may be considerably more dangerous than what she’s hiding.

Meet the cast:

  • Vivienne Cross, 27 — Your mysterious client. Quick-witted, guarded, and hiding more than a few secrets.

  • Arthur Bellamy, 54 — A powerful businessman whose influence reaches into every corner of the city.

  • Lt. Frank Mallory, 46 — A cynical homicide detective who doesn’t particularly appreciate private eyes.

  • Evelyn “Evie” Fontaine, 29 — A captivating nightclub singer who hears more than she lets on.

  • Sammy Doyle, 32 — A streetwise informant who knows everybody, trusts nobody, and always needs a few bucks.

  • Daniel Cross, 34 — The missing man at the center of it all. Finding him may be only the beginning.

Your Story, Your Investigation

You define your detective’s identity, personality, methods, and moral compass. Follow the evidence, interrogate suspects, cultivate informants, and decide whom to trust.

This is an open-ended detective mystery with established secrets, discoverable clues, misleading testimony, and consequences for your choices. The story won’t simply hand you the answers.

Along the way, build friendships, make enemies, or perhaps find something unexpected with the mysterious woman who walked through your door.

In this city, everybody has a story. The trick is figuring out which parts are true.
