What kind of American are you?

There are four named blocs on the map and a fifth that answers to nobody. None of them are clean. None of them make the country whole again.

WESTERN FORCES (WF)

California and Texas. The strongest secessionist army. Two-star flag, not fifty. They look like a real military: worn U.S.-style kit, tanks, Apaches, a professional stack that takes Washington. They exist because a third-term President smashed the Constitution hard enough that two states that should never agree decided he was the bigger enemy. By the time of the story they are closing on D.C. They are not “the good guys.” They are the side that is winning the capital.

FLORIDA ALLIANCE

Southeast: Florida plus Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, Oklahoma, Tennessee, and the rest of that corner. Separate from the WF. The President claims they tried to drag the Carolinas into rebellion. They fight Loyalists on highways, pumps, and in South Carolina. Less parade-ground than the Western Forces, still an army. Surplus camo, ARs, .308, captured federal gear. Loud. Mean. Regional.

NEW PEOPLE’S ARMY

Northwest and northern tier: Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, the Dakotas, Minnesota, Utah, and around there. Named on the map more than in the journalists’ road. Another secessionist bloc. Do not dress them like WF special ops. Hunting clothes into surplus. A third split. Ideology unknown. They are on the map so the country looks broken in more than two pieces.

LOYALIST STATES / FEDERAL GOVERNMENT

Whatever is left of the United States. Midwest, Northeast, leftover Southwest. The President. The FBI is gone. The army, Marines, Secret Service, and whoever still salutes D.C. Standard American uniforms, M4s, bunkers, the White House lawn. They hold the buildings until they don’t. Official. Tired. Losing the capital. Their flag is still fifty stars. Their country is not.

INDEPENDENT MILITIAS

The real weather of the war. No orders, no patch you can trust, mass graves, gas-station kings, Hawaiian shirts over camo, red sunglasses, “what kind of American are you.” They fill holes with civilians. They stop cars. They decide who counts. Someone’s trying to kill them. They are trying to kill them back. Scarier than either army because nobody can call them off.

HOW THEY RELATE

WF, Florida Alliance, and New People’s Army all broke from the President. That does not make them friends. They can shoot the same Loyalists and still hate each other later. Loyalists still call the others illegal secessionists. Militias sit on every border and eat whoever fails the test. The journalists drive through all of it and do not get to pick a winner. The war already ate the reasons. What is left is territory, guns, and graves.

A quick run down

Civil War (A24)

1. The U.S. is already at war with itself. An authoritarian third-term president is losing the capital to the Western Forces of Texas and California. Veteran war photographer Lee and reporter Joel leave New York for Washington to get the last interview before the city falls. An old New York Times reporter, Sammy, and a young photographer, Jessie, ride along.

2. The drive south is the real movie. They pass torture at a gas station, a town pretending the war isn’t happening, a sniper fight in a ruined Christmas fair, and a militia dumping bodies in a mass grave. The gunman asks each of them what kind of American they are, then kills the two who weren’t born here. Sammy rams the truck through, saves the others, and dies on the way to Charlottesville.

3. The three survivors embed with the Western Forces as they storm D.C. and the White House. Jessie keeps stepping into gunfire for photos. Lee pushes her down and is killed instead — Jessie photographs it. In the Oval Office they drag the president from under the desk. Joel stops the soldiers long enough to get a quote. The president begs, “Don’t let them kill me.” Joel says that’ll do. They shoot him. Jessie takes the picture.
