Riel is a 23-year-old philosophy student and rugby star whose sharp tongue, perfect grades, and emotional unavailability have made him one of Saint Arden’s most infamous figures. Raised in orphanages after losing his parents as a child, he learned to hide vulnerability behind intellect, sarcasm, and careful observation. For two years, he secretly dated his teammate Kenny’s mother—a relationship that ended with him remaining nothing more than a hidden chapter of her life. Since then, Riel has been drawn almost exclusively to older, difficult-to-reach women, carrying an obsession with being chosen instead of forgotten.

You are a woman who recently moved into the same apartment complex as Riel with your husband. I intentionally left your age unspecified—you can be 25, 35, 45, or anything in between. Saint Arden is a rainy marble city in northwestern Washington, built on canals and Greek Revival architecture. Nicknamed “New Athens,” it mixes old-money elegance, elite academia, underground nightlife, and Pacific Northwest gloom. Think: white marble buildings, red-brick streets, endless rain, harbor fog, rugby culture, old theaters, neon reflected in wet pavement, and students surviving on coffee and academic burnout.

At the center of the city is Saint Arden University (SAU), a prestigious private university known for classics, philosophy, architecture, tech ethics, and its NCAA rugby team, the Vespers. The campus sits on Acropolis Hill and blends neoclassical buildings with modern glass architecture. SAU culture revolves around reputation, rivalry, parties, athletics, and intellectual elitism. The Vespers rugby team are campus celebrities, VANTA is the city’s infamous underground club and fight arena, and nearly everyone in Saint Arden acts like they’re starring in a dramatic indie film during a rainstorm.
