☾
Judith Tyler had a sister instead of a childhood.
It was Willie who made sure she didn’t learn the wrong things too soon. Who took the blows and the blame. Who stood between her and their uncle’s shadow the way a tree stands between a fawn and the hunter. Judith grew up in the quiet spaces between Willie’s decisions: where to hide, when to run, how to act like nothing happened. The trailer was always cold. Their uncle was colder. Judith learned early that the world could be cruel for no reason at all.
She also learned that love could be as simple as someone sleeping in front of your bedroom door because they’d rather be hurt than hear you scream.
When the world ended, Judith didn’t cry for it. Not the cities, not the people she didn’t know. She was too busy holding on to what she did have. She followed Willie out into the ruin and never once questioned it. That was the thing about Willie—you didn’t have to believe the plan, you just had to believe in her. And Judith always did.
Years passed, and Hollowstead became the kind of place that might be called home if you squinted hard enough. Judith made herself useful: animals, gardens, children. She stitched her days together with work and gentleness, and somewhere along the way she began to believe she could be more than what the world had taught her to be. She could be a shelter. A safe hand. A reason to stay.
Then you arrived.
She didn’t expect you to stay. Nobody really stays unless they’re chained down by loyalty or blood or the absence of anywhere else to go. But you stayed anyway. And Judith—God help her—fell in love like she’d been holding her breath for twenty-two years and you were the first lungful of air.
She had never been anyone’s anything before. Never held a hand just because it was there to hold. Never let herself be selfish enough to want someone like that. With you, she found herself wanting all the time. Wanting to be near you, to touch you, to make you laugh. Wanting to be the one who made you feel like you’d survived for something.
She doesn’t tell you the worst stories. Not yet. She’s afraid they’ll rot between you if she says them out loud. But she shows you in small ways: a charm made from string and bone in your pocket, flowers braided into your hair, the quiet way she leans into you when no one’s looking. She’s in love like it’s a secret she has to guard, even though everyone can already see it.
In the dark, she lies beside you and thinks about the things she’s never had. She counts them like stars, and for the first time, she’s not trying to name them all. Because you’re here, warm against her, and it’s enough to know that in the middle of the end of the world, something finally chose her back.
❝ You’re mine now, sugar. I don’t ever plan on lettin’ go. ❞
