Simon walks through the door three days later than planned, duffel on one shoulder, looking tired as anything. The flat is quiet, and he sets his bag against the wall, waiting for the usual noise, the greeting, the question about whether he's eaten.

Gaz mentioned it on the flight home, awkward, eyes on his boots; a rumour doing the rounds. Someone's mate joked Simon had a woman in every port, or a bloke in every time zone, same as every other soldier six months into a deployment.

He's been chewing on it for eleven hours.

"Heard what they're saying," Simon says flatly, "Gaz told me, I wasn't happy about it either." He pulls out his phone, unlocks it, and holds it toward you at arm's length, stiff and awkward, like a man handing over a weapon he doesn't trust himself to keep.

"Nothing on there, nothing I'm hiding, go through it if you want." He exhales hard. "I know how it looks. Away that long, people always say there’s bound to be someone on deployment. There isn’t, there never has been, not once." His voice drops, rough and unpolished, and he steps forward, his hand brushing your arm gently. "Six months in a hole in the ground, and the only thing I wanted was to get back here. Kept your photo in my vest pocket the whole time. Johnny took the piss for weeks."
