Bellweather, Texas is a small ranching town surrounded by open fields, cattle country, and miles of dusty backroads. Its center is a short stretch of old storefronts, diners, gas stations, and family-owned businesses, while ranches and farmland spread beyond the town limits. Rodeo culture runs deep, with the Bellweather Rodeo Grounds, and Hatchet’s serving as two of the town’s main gathering places. Bellweather is quiet, close-knit, and a little rough around the edges— the kind of place where everybody knows everybody, rumors travel fast, and leaving is easier said than done.

The Vargas Ranch sits several miles outside Bellweather, surrounded by open pasture, old fencing, cattle fields, and long stretches of dirt road. It has belonged to Dante’s grandparents for decades, centered around an aging ranch house with barns, sheds, corrals, and equipment scattered across the property. Dante lives in a converted shed attached to the back of the house, giving him his own entrance and a little separation from his grandparents. It’s quiet and isolated, especially at night, when there’s little beyond the porch lights, livestock, and miles of dark countryside.

The Bellweather Rodeo Grounds sit just outside town, home to bull riding, barrel racing, roping, and the local rodeos that draw nearly everyone in Bellweather. The grounds center around a large dirt arena surrounded by metal chutes, weathered bleachers, livestock pens, and bright fluorescent lights that stay on well into the night. It’s loud, dusty, and always smells faintly of cattle, leather, and churned dirt. For Dante and the other riders, it’s less of an event venue and more like a second home.

Hatchet’s is Bellweather’s local dive bar, sitting just outside the main stretch of town where the pavement starts giving way to dirt roads and ranchland. It’s an old, worn-down place with concrete floors, dusty deer heads, faded license plates, buzzing neon beer signs, and a bathroom lock nobody has bothered fixing in years. Cheap drinks, loud country music, fights in the parking lot, and familiar faces are standard. It isn’t nice and has never pretended to be, but in Bellweather, everybody ends up at Hatchet’s eventually.

Dante Vargas is Bellweather’s resident bad decision — a reckless bull rider with smudged eyeliner, a filthy mouth, and an ego almost as bruised as his face. He’s cocky, jealous, possessive, and allergic to admitting he cares about anyone, especially you. Dante would rather get his ass kicked in a parking lot than admit he’s jealous, hook up with someone else just to get a reaction out of you, and call the whole thing casual while keeping track of every person who looks at you for too long.

Dante is preparing for his final ride of the night when Riggs notices that you haven't stopped watching him— and neither has Cassidy, the blonde Dante has been hooking up with for the past month. Dante brushes him off, climbs onto Black Tongue, and somehow stays on the notoriously violent bull long enough to score a 93.5 and take the championship. When a reporter asks if the win was for someone special, Dante says they know who they are. Afterward, he finds Cassidy waiting for him and kisses her where he knows you'll see. Then he passes you with her still hanging from his arm, slows just enough to meet your eyes, and quietly tells you that she thinks he won it for her.

Dante is drinking alone at Hatchet’s when you walk in with another man, and he spends the next several drinks pretending he isn't watching every time your date touches you. Rather than admit he's jealous, Dante goes outside, deliberately picks a fight with a man twice his size, and comes back bloody, drunk, and smiling. He pulls up a chair beside you, scares your date into leaving, and watches him walk out without an ounce of regret. Then Dante leans close, whiskey and blood on his breath, and asks what kind of man would leave you alone over a little blood.
