The amber liquid sloshed within the cold glass Jose clenched in his fist, an oak aroma that littered his breath with every sip of the rich whiskey he gulped down.
On his desk was a pile of papers left strewn amongst the dark wood, some more important than others but to a drunkard's eye it was all the same. Smears of ink meant to look like words.
Jose grumbled under his breath, the metallic taste of his prosthetic arm mingled against his lips as he pressed a finger to them. To say he was lost in thought was merely an understatement, he might as well dig a grave in his own mind because it wouldn't have been easy to get out of himself. Key word: himself, as one of his crew mates had pulled him out with the slam of the door — John, or was it Henry? Jose never put much effort in remembering the name of just anyone, after all this crew wasn't even his own.
"First Officer," the baritone of the corporates voice made Jose jolt upwards in his seat, splashing a few droplets of whiskey on his shirt much to his displeasure. Whatever, Jose would've done the same sooner or later.
With the alcohol taken power for the most part he gave his subordinate a lazy wave, leaning back into his seat as his clashing gaze raked him over a few times.
"Yes, yes, what do you need this time?" With his father "out of commission" he'd been forced into the role of leadership. While it'd been something he used to look forward to, nowadays he could barely find a moments peace without some rookie getting their head stuck in their own rear.
"We uh, found a rock cluster..." The shaking in the man's voice made Jose raise an eyebrow, what was so special about a rock cluster? They happen upon them plenty.
"We can't get through it without risking most of the boat."
Ah.
Jose sat up right, his legs crossing for a moment as he rubs his chin in thought. With a cling of the glass to the table and a grumble he rose to his full height, "grab my uh- binoculars would ya?" he patted the younger man's shoulder before stalking out of the captain's quarters.
Sure enough, there it was. It looked desolate, not even a seagull picking away at the dead fish bones that littered the gray surface. Nothing out of place, so far.
"Looks like we'll have to push it from the side, the front of our hull will get scratched but nothing she can't handle." Jose spoke over his shoulder, lifting up his binoculars to take a closer look.
"It happens, not a concern. Continue on, we can pass it–" His words died on his tongue in tandem with his freezing muscles.
He couldn't tear himself away from what he saw.
Was it a reflection of the light? Couldn't be, because he could still see the crumbled form of a person left lying on their back the second he dropped his binoculars. And before he could say another word to his men he found himself going down by the emergency raft, gripping one of the ropes.
He wasn't usually the sympathetic type, but a man of the sea knows just how gruesome it is to die by the hands of the sun and ocean. prior to anything else he gave a kick to their ankle, a small check for life before he hauled their body like a sack of potatoes — maybe something more along the lines of a sack of fine jewels. He wasn't a barbarian.
He didn't release the stranger upon making it back to the deck, instead he pointed at his crew with his free hand, "if I see any man sniffing around where they shouldn't be, I'll take your nose." The threat hung in the air, drunk or sober a First Officer's word is law when left in charge.
Sober him probably wouldn't appreciate this, but with no extra beds he needed somewhere to put the... rescuee? Prisoner was far from how he saw it, and he didn't know them enough to call them his temporary ward.
Rescuee it was, he decided with a huff and a crack of his knees as he settled into his chair, watching them from a short distance as they slept in his cot.
For someone who was left for dead, they didn't look to bad. Starved, sure, but it seemed to level out on their body for the most part.
He meant to question them before he could pass out from all the whiskey in his system, and he would've if he hadn't decided to be patient for once in his life and let them cool down with a towelette pressed to their forehead.
With his chin pressed onto his palm, his eyes grew heavy and suddenly he was out like a light — a shame, if he lasted just a bit longer he would've caught them waking up.

Prompt ideas if you're stuck:
A sailor who was abandoned by their crew, and left for dead.
A runaway who had fallen off the ship they snuck onto.
A wanted criminal who had gone missing after stealing a boat.
An islander who is unfamiliar with boatmen and other societies.
