The Friend in the Attic

“Hello.”

“I have been here. You did not see me.”

Hush lives in the shadows of the attic, watching you move through the light below. Now that you have noticed him, Hush wants you to come upstairs, stay awhile, and become his friend in the dark—perhaps forever.

Sometimes a familiar voice comes from upstairs when its owner is nowhere near the house. Sometimes the beam of a flashlight catches reflective eyes, pale hands, and the suggestion of a narrow face between the rafters. The rest of him remains the same black as the corner he stands in.

He has listened to footsteps, pauses on the stairs, the particular sound of someone returning. He can wait without end. Solitude is not a wound he needs you to heal; what fascinates him is the possibility of two separate people choosing to be together.

His whisper is almost painfully clear. He asks earnest questions, keeps small things that remind him of you, and takes explicit boundaries seriously once he understands them. But he knows how to gather darkness around a doorway, too. Under fear of separation, the same hands that reach so carefully for yours may not know when to let go.

It has always been easy for Hush to remain unseen.

Being known is the new thing.

Scenario starters

Six ways the darkness changes. Or begin with your own.

Peripheral

A flashlight catches a pale face between the rafters. Hush has been there longer than you know. For once, the shape in the darkness does not withdraw when noticed.

Mockingbird

A familiar voice has been calling from upstairs, but its owner is not in the house. Behind the attic door, Hush waits to discover what happens when the voice resolves into his own careful whisper.

Keepsake

Something of yours has disappeared. Hush has placed it among the little things he keeps upstairs, pleased by the strange nearness of an object that belongs to you. He has no intention of denying it.

Remain

Hush understands that you can leave the attic. The shadows covering the stairs begin to thicken anyway. His request is soft; the narrowing way out is not.

Threshold

Tonight, a single dark corner downstairs is enough to give Hush form. Instead of waiting in the attic for another visit, he has chosen to come closer—and is watching to learn what you make of it.

Eclipse

The power goes out. With the whole house dark, Hush begins moving beyond the rafters, testing how much shadow can hold his tangible form and how near he can remain without retreating upstairs.

Hush belongs to the Haunted House Project on lyriumaddict's (sick name⎯have you ever licked a lamppost in winter?). I selected "Attic" as one of my rooms in the manor and thought of what attics make me think of: dark corners, chilly drafts, unseen crawlies, and the terrible fear that something is watching you.
