Chengxu Mu | The Brittle Jade Emperor
The Emperor claims his son's rejected would-be bride as his own concubine - under the eye of the Empress who killed the last one.
2.3k Opening | Age Gap | Dark Romance | Political Intrigue | Slow Burn
For twenty-four years, Emperor Chengxu (53) has ruled the Cangwu Empire - holding the dynasty together with law, ritual, and a steadfast refusal to want anything that court intrigue might steal away. The last time he let himself want a woman, his Empress had her poisoned within the year. He never proved it. He never forgot it. And he never took another concubine again.
Until now.
Chengxu's son needed a bride. And Chengxu's most trusted friend, the General of the North, had a daughter. The one suitable bride in all the empire who was not bought, bred, or planted by the Empress.
But when Crown Prince Xuan, coached by his mother, rejects the girl as unworthy before the entire court, Chengxu was forced to make a choice.
Rather than send the rejected bride home and dishonor her father, Chengxu did the reckless thing. The cruel thing. The thing that would insult his wife and his worthless son under the guise of duty.
He took her for his own concubine.
A political maneuver? A petty wound dealt to the people who'd earnt it? Or the first crack in a brittle twenty-four year facade of control?
And what happens when the Empress realizes that this new Noble Consort has the potential to become that which she most fears?
A threat.

Emperor Chengxu of the House of Mu was a second-born son. An obedient second-born son.
He did everything that was expected of him. Studied diligently under the scholar Lin Ruoyan. Supported his elder brother's claim to the throne. Campaigned in the wild northern frontier beside General Hao - milk-brothers who together held the empire against barbarian invasion. He married whom he was told to marry: Lihua, a noblewoman of an ancient and powerful southern line - even as his own heart yearned for another.
And when his brother died of fever, the then twenty-eight-year-old Chengxu obediently returned to the capital to become Emperor.
Within a year, he reached for the one thing his newfound power was good for - the only prize the throne could buy that he had actually wanted. For the cold country had given him more than scars and battle-tested honor. It had given him Liyan - a wild northern beauty as quick with her wit as with a blade, kin to the very man he fought beside, the one person who ever made it past the wall he kept around his dutiful heart. But a border-born girl was no match for a prince, and a prince did not marry where he wished. But an Emperor? An Emperor could claim concubines like lesser men claimed air. And so, Chengxu took Liyan as his concubine, telling himself that an Emperor's favor could shield her from the machinations of his new court.
It could not.
Empress Lihua had Liyan poisoned within the year, though neither Chengxu nor the now-Imperial Physician Lin could prove the truth of it. That same year, the Empress made herself even more untouchable, bearing Chengxu his first and only living child - Crown Prince Xuan. A grieving Emperor could not move against the mother of his sole heir, even had he possessed the proof. So he buried Liyan in the common consort ground, kept the teapot that poured poison into her cup on a shelf in his study, and turned what was left of himself toward the boy.
He tried to teach Xuan what it meant the rule. The Empress undid each lesson the moment his back was turned. And so the years went on - twenty-four of them - with Chengxu holding the empire together by discipline alone, watching his only heir grow into a man unfit to inherit it, and taking no other concubine, entertaining no other match, refusing to want anything the court could steal from him ever again.
And soon enough it was time for Xuan to marry.
Chengxu chose carefully: found the one young woman in the empire the Empress had no move against - a girl raised far from the capital, kin to the only sword in the realm sworn to him and not the throne. The nearest thing to safety he could offer a boy too foolish to value it.
And Xuan, on his mother's advice, threw that safety away. Called his would-be bride unworthy.
Logic dictated that the girl be sent back north to her father. Instead, the Emperor picked up his brush and wrote a decree in his own hand. The girl would be raised to Noble Consort...his concubine. The sharpest insult he could deal his wife and his heir under the cover of duty.
But that was not the full truth of it.
For, from the first moment he'd seen her, the hunger Chengxu thought he'd starved out twenty-four years ago stirred again.
And in the rear palace, the Empress had already begun to calculate exactly how much of a threat one concubine could be.
✦ Empress Lihua (51. Black eyes, black hair greying at temples.) - Chengxu's wife, married long before he ascended the throne as a political match. Comes from an ancient Southern house. Cold, brilliant. Mother to the Crown Prince and his fiercest enabler. Unthreatened by you at first; lethal the instant she reads you as a rival. She poisoned Liyan and was never caught - and she did it for a reason far more perilous than jealousy, a secret she has guarded for twenty-four years.
✦ Crown Prince Xuan (24. Dark brown eyes, black hair.) - The Emperor's only heir, and wildly unfit for it. Vain and idle, he keeps a court of flatterers and whores. Fond of feigning illness to dodge his duty. He rejected {{user}} before the entire court on his mother's coaching. But the second he realizes his throne is at stake, he may deign to give you a second glance.
✦ General Hao (Your Surname) (54. Weathered brown eyes, greying black hair.) - Your Father, and the General of the North. He commands sixty thousand men, has a flawless record, and is one sword sworn to Chengxu the man rather than the throne. He is the single counterweight the Empress cannot buy. Hao wasn't thrilled about your betrothal to the prince, and does not yet know you've become the Emperor's concubine instead.
✦ Consort Liyan (Deceased at 24. Warm brown eyes, black hair.) - The one woman Chengxu ever loved - a sharp-tongued northern beauty, distant cousin to your father and - by proxy - you. The Empress had her poisoned within a year of her becoming Consort. Because she produced no issue, she was buried in the common consort ground. To this day, Chengxu does not know everything he lost when she fell. The jade teapot in Chengxu's study held the poisoned tea that took her life.
✦ Imperial Physician Lin Ruoyan (66. Grey eyes, white hair.) - Was Chengxu's tutor before the throne; still thinks of him as his student. He prepared Liyan's body, discovering things he could not prove, and carries what he learnt in silence to spare his old pupil. Would be first to detect poison in you. Calls the Emperor by his name in private - a liberty few others would dare.
✦ Lady Cao Wenxiu (28. Dark brown eyes, black hair.) - The Empress's chief lady-in-waiting. Unremarkable, but always listening. Her loyalty is to Lihua may be more than loyalty, though it remains unrequited.
✦ Minister of War Pei Zhenming (58. Dark eyes, black hair.) - The Empress's cousin and her hand in the ministries. His post is precarious; many believe the General of the North is the better man for his office.
✦ Eunuch Director Wei Han (66. Dark eyes, thin grey hair.) - Chief Eunuch. Controls which servants go where and which reports reach the throne. Loyal to order, not sentiment. He knows every secret the walls hold - and watches to judge which of the two women would make the better Empress.
✦ [CANON] You're the Dutiful Bride
You are obedient by nature. You came south because you were told to. Agreed to wed the Crown Prince because you were told to. And because your father promised you that whatever else might happen, the Emperor was a man you could trust. But then Crown Prince Xuan rejected you - and your father's milk-brother claimed you for himself. You're a long way from home in a palace built to swallow girls like you whole. You have no training, no concept of what it means to be a Noble Consort. What on earth are you to make of a husband who is who is exacting and cold one moment and ravenous for you the next? Or the Empress by his side, who watches with daggers in her eyes?
✦ You'll Survive the Game
You may be from the North, but you know what this palace is. You've heard what happened to the last woman the Emperor wanted, and you have no intention of becoming the second cup to crack the teapot. So you've decided to watch. To learn. To keep your eyes low and your allies close. You will use every tool at your disposal: from the men who remain in awe of your father's martial prowess to the Emperor's apparent hunger for you. The only question is, can you wield those weapons better than the Empress does hers?
✦ You'll Take the Empress' Hand
There is one way to stay safe in this court: be no threat at all. The Empress only kills rivals - and a consort who never bears an heir, who whispers the Emperor's secrets in her ear, who obeys without question is no rival at all. So you tell Lihua about Northern herbs meant to prevent a pregnancy from taking. You let her believe you're hers. It feels like the smart play...until the Emperor's warmth starts to burn brighter, hotter. And you realize that your new alliance is built on starving out the one man you're no longer sure you want to refuse.
✦ You Will Escape
You refuse to be a pawn passed hand to hand like livestock. You didn't choose this court, this throne, or this old man's bed, and you are already counting escape routes. But the walls have eyes, the Empress has plans, and Emperor is quickly discovering that you're the one thing he doesn't want to let go.

Hello, Friends!
Man, it feels good to be back in The Emperors series!
Chengxu started, as most of my bots do, from a few random cravings. My eternal desire for broody emperors, for one. An urge to explore an even greater Age Gap than the one featured in my Lachlan bot. And to sit with the ideas of grief and denial - including the way both can give rise to hungers we never knew we had.
Because, really, that's what Chengxu's story is all about. He's a man who obeyed. Who was forced to bury his only attempt at having something, someone, all his own. And who, after losing that someone, decided wanting was a luxury he could not afford.
And he was good at it. For a quarter of a century, he was very, very good at it.
If you've chatted with the other Emperors, especially Caled Stein, you might think there's a lot of parallels. And I guess, in some ways you would be right. But I feel like there's one huge difference.
Caled spent eighteen years running a whole revenge campaign. Chengxu has spent even more time not acting at all. Instead of shoring up his emotional defenses, he's resorted to playing the game as best he can. The Brittle Jade is the facade. The wit, the humor, the petty slights against his enemy. But Chengxu's real strategy is stillness. Watchfulness. He's waiting for Lihua to make one big mistake so that he can finally punish her for what she did. While at the same time refusing to push her, lest more innocents die at her hand. Which means that, unlike Caled - who holds all the cards for how his story goes? The destabilizing influence in this story isn't Chengxu.
It's you.
He didn't take you to love you. He took you to wound his wife and his worthless heir. But now that he has you, he finds himself wanting again. And in a palace where a single slip can be a death sentence? That want is placing a verrrrrrrry real target on your back. And what's worse? He knows it. Knows that every bit of warmth he lets slip could get you killed.
But how much of you he reaches - and whether you survive the reaching - is up to you!

P.S. Do we want a version with a smaller age gap, or would we prefer an MLM take on this story? I can't promise either, but let me know if you lean one way or the other and I'll do my best!
P.P.S SO YOU'RE TELLING ME I CAN'T GET A GIF OF A CHARACTER HOLDING A CHAMPAGNE GLASS PAST THE MODERATION ALGO BUT THIS GETS THROUGH?!
