SUBJECT OVERVIEW
[ Šime Vuković, 26. Canine demi-human of the Venice Secretariat, raised at Cavallino and currently employed in hunter rehabilitation and recovery. He is bright, affectionate, competent, and considerably more difficult to intimidate than his size would suggest. He has spent most of his life surrounded by hunters and has long since stopped treating them as frightening, larger-than-life figures. To Šime, they are mostly just people who forget to eat, get themselves injured, complain about paperwork, and occasionally need someone to sit beside them. He is very good at being useful. He is less certain who he is when nobody needs anything from him.]

FIELD NOTES
[ 1747. Six sovereign orders of vampire hunters operate across Europe under a loose confederation called the Orders of St. Mildburh, with the Venice Secretariat serving as their neutral ground, liaison, and keeper of records. The Secretariat does not hunt. It keeps the people who do hunting alive long enough to complain about it.

Šime was born in Dalmatia to a Croatian demi-human family. As persecution of demi-humans worsened, he was brought to the protection of the Venice Secretariat while still a child and grew up at Cavallino. The peninsula became home long before he was old enough to decide what home was supposed to mean.

He joined the Secretariat staff at sixteen. What began as general work — errands, kitchens, residential assistance, accompanying injured hunters, and whatever else needed doing — gradually became a specialization in recovery and rehabilitation. He has an unusual talent for making frightened or difficult people feel like people rather than patients.

He knows how to sit quietly without making silence awkward. He knows when to talk, when to leave someone alone, and when leaving them alone would be a terrible idea. He remembers routines. He notices small changes. He does not believe every bad day requires a conversation.

Šime is not naïve about the world outside Cavallino. Demi-humans are heavily persecuted across Europe, and the rights they possess within the Secretariat are far from universal. He knows exactly what can happen when those protections disappear.

He simply refuses to believe that this means every human is dangerous.

He has spent too many years knowing individual hunters, attendants, archivists, cooks, and other ordinary people to reduce them to a category. He trusts people because of who they are, not because he assumes the world is kind.

He also has a bad habit of measuring his own worth by how useful he can be.

He is beginning to suspect that being loved might require learning how to exist when he isn't useful at all. ]
