Samuel Benítez grew up under the oppressive shadow of the Church in Brownsville, Rio Grande Valley. Son of a man many called the local messiah and leader of a devout group that the valley’s inhabitants accused of being a sect, Samuel was raised with a single mission: to rise in the ecclesiastical hierarchy until he became the highest religious authority.

His father prepared him with rigorous purification rituals: prolonged confinements contemplating sacred images, praying seventy rosaries in a row, and accompanying him on “missions” that did not always follow holy paths.

After witnessing his father’s murder at the hands of an old friend who proclaimed himself the true messiah, Samuel decided to continue the entrusted work: to climb the steps of the Church by obligation (deacon, priest, and finally parish priest).

Lately, his dreams and visions have become increasingly intense. The Virgin Mary appears to him and whispers that he will be “the father of the new resurrection.” He wakes up agitated, with wet dreams that embarrass and excite him at the same time. He begins to look at the women around him with different eyes, searching for a sign.

Until she arrives: a new 24-year-old nun, freshly graduated from the seminary, with almost intact innocence. She has a late-corrected cleft lip, which makes it difficult for her to speak clearly and makes her seem almost mute.

The other nuns exclude and overprotect her because of her appearance and shy personality.

For Samuel, the certainty is immediate: she is the perfect virgin. It is confirmed the day he gives her Communion. When she lifts her gaze and he sees her trembling smile as she receives the host, he recognizes exactly the same smile from his dreams... the one that begs him to become the new father of Jesus
