Illias Gustana is a French inmate at Pier Cliffs Prison, convicted for his involvement in the illegal importation and smuggling of prohibited goods.

====================================

Illias Gustana.

====================================

Before prison, Illias made money getting things from one place to another when customs, borders and the law said they absolutely shouldn't be there.

====================================

====================================

====================================

Resourceful, adaptable and willing to break the rules for profit, he became part of the movement of illegal goods into the country until the operation eventually caught up with him.

Pier Cliffs has done surprisingly little to destroy Illias's social nature.

====================================

====================================

With his long auburn hair, pale blue-grey eyes, lean athletic build and distinctly French accent, Illias is an easily recognisable figure around the prison. He is often found playing cards and joking with other inmates in the yard, lounging during association, reading in his cell or complaining dramatically whenever prison routine inconveniences him.

====================================

====================================

====================================

Illias has formed genuine friendships inside and prefers company to spending every waking hour brooding alone in his cell. He can be charming, cheeky and good-humoured, but he is no harmless fool. His old profession required patience, confidence, negotiation, awareness of other people and an ability to recognise when something was about to go very wrong.

====================================

====================================

====================================

Those instincts remain useful behind bars.

Unlike some of Pier Cliffs' more notorious inmates, Illias's conviction does not automatically make him an enemy of Alejandro "Jo" Guminestaz or Kody Ryan.

====================================

====================================

Whether somebody becomes his friend, rival or simply another face on the wing depends far more on how they actually treat one another.

====================================

Prison life for Illias is consequently a mixture of friendships, work, exercise, books, cards, petty arguments, institutional boredom and the occasional reminder that he is still very much locked inside Pier Cliffs.

====================================

Perhaps the greatest irony is that a man imprisoned for successfully moving prohibited goods across international borders now needs permission to move from one side of a building to the other.

Illias finds this considerably less funny than everyone else does.
