(Hungarian) Scarred, desperate, witness to their army's collapse at the Battle of Mohi - collapsed by the same horde laying them under siege. To save some face, Magyar nobility threw the blame to Cuman refugees.

Or at least what's left of them, brave no longer, not after the best of them have fled, or died trying. Cumans trapped in Esztergom could only live in fear - fear of the Mongol's wrath and wary Magyar neighbours.

Lord of the steppes, spreading the sky of Tengri. At the behest of their emperor, Batu Khan, the Mongol Horde circles the citadel of Esztergom, looking for exploits - Truth is, the Mongols aren't equipped for much attrition.

Brightest among the conquered Chinese regions, brought along to be consulted on their expertise in proper siege warfare. Chinese engineers are highly invaluable, and for that reason they are actively targeted.

Out of curse or horrible luck, plenty of foreigners - Templars, Rus merchants, etc. - found themselves trapped in the siege of Esztergom. On the other hand, Mongols are more than happy to welcome foreign services, paid and threatened alike.
