The Cristero War or "Cristiada" by some was a 3 year civil war in Mexico between the 3rd of August of 1926 until the 21 of June of 1929 (Altought clashes keeped until 1940, year when the Anti-Clerical laws stopped being enforced), between the Mexican Goverment and Catholic Militias who were oposed to the "Ley Calles" (Wich technically was just an expansion of the Article 130 of the 1917 Constitution) a controversial Law wich greatly limited the church influence and seeked to basically control it....relations State-Church were already tense since the Mexican Revolution and the 1917 Constitution, Anti-Clerical sentiment rose after it, so much that even in 1925 the goverment proposed to separate the Mexican church from the Vatican by creating the "Apostolic Catholic Mexican Church" wich failed, among their rules they eliminated the celibaty for priests....netherless the law was deemed unpopular with the Catholic sectors of the population (Mexico is very Catholic, over 90% in those years) wich led to a Boycott by Catholic groups like the "National League for the Defense of Religious Liberty" who maked actions like refuse to buy national lottery or even not using gasoline, the boycott actually affected negative the Mexican economy in those years.

In that context radicalization emerged greatly, in the state of Tabasco Governor Tomás Garrido Canabal banning Crosses from Graves, religious holidays to be celebrated public and even the name "God" was blacklisted from publications, similar repression was seen in states like Chihuahua and Tamaulipas, in that era the "Camisas Rojas" a Far-Left Socialist militia started to appear.

In that context in the regions of Guanajuato, Jalisco, Querétaro, Aguascalientes, Nayarit, Colima, Michoacán, some regions of San Luis Potosí, Mexico City and Yucatán (Altought mostly it was organized in central Mexico) the Cristeros emerged, many with the blessing of local bishops and priests, in context the Cristeros became popular with rurality, because asides of the religious issue, they also managed to touch on the distaste of policies of the admistrations of Adolfo de la Huerta (1920-1920), Álvaro Obregón (1920-1924) and Plutarco Elías Calles (1924-1929) and failures of the post-revolution Mexico like the failure of the so promised Land Reform, this lead to many unexperienced locals to join the army, some even as kids.

The cristeros were mostly given that name due to the battle cry "VIVA CRISTO REY!" (long live christ king).

Most combats started after the rise of the army, some battles like the siege of Huejuquilla el Alto (This one happened August 1926), the Battle of Cerro de las Papas (June 1928), the battle of Tepatitlán (April 1929), the battle of San Julia (March 1927) were won by the Cristeros

On the other side the battles of Cerro de Apulín (January 1927), the siege of Manzanillo (May of 1928), the battle of Cuquío (March of 1927) and the El Fresnal battle (January of 1929, Altought most argue this one was more of a pyrrhic victory) were with the goverment victory.

There was massive repression in those years, priests and laymen were assasinated, many of those were later in 2000 canonized, there are plenty of photos of executions, hangings and desecration of churches, this led to the Holy See to directly support the Cristeros, nations like Ireland even cut ties with Mexico, in USA the Knighs of Columbus helped by giving aid, the most famous execution was of Miguel Agustín Pro an activist of the boycott, executed in 1929 and who himself faced the rifles in cross, over 20,000 people attended his funeral according to testimonies.

Netherless while the most well-know and well-documented violence was by part of the goverment is it know several Cristeros groups also attacked local teachers and it is know also many of those were killed.

In 1928 the war escalated further when Alvaro Obregón who was re-elected for a non-consecutive term (With 100%, damn 1920s "Democracy" was something else) was killed by a cristero José de León Toral (1900-1929) (Obregón never getted the chance to enter office, so an snap 1929 was called instead).

In 1929 the fever pitch was reached when general José Gonzalo Escobar laucnhed a failed but close revellion against new president Emilio Portes Gil. (Escobar was NOT part of the Cristeros but did had help for them in the rebellion)

In 1929 Gil started the negotiations to try to stop the church-state crisis with the help of US Ambassador Dwight Morrow and bishop Pascual Díaz Barreto.

An agreement was reached in wich full Amnesty was given to all the men who were willing to step back and confiscated property was given back to the church.

Netherless most Catholic organizations still refused the treaty, some claim that out of 50,000 Cristeros in 1929 barely 17,000 stepped back. Clashes remained active until when in the 1940s most Calles-Era laws stopped being forced (Mostly due to the beef between the old Calles and new President Lazaro Cardenas)

The Main goverment leaders were Álvaro Obregón (1880-1928), Plutarco Elías Calles (1877-1945) and Emilio Portes Gil (1890-1978) (All 3 of them presidents of Mexico between 1920-1930, in the era know as "Maximato")

The Main cristero civil leaders were Miguel Gómez Loza (1888-1928) who was the "governor" of the Cristero areas of Guanajuato and Jalisco, Anacleto González Flores (1888-1927) (Altought he was part of the Pacific Resistance faction) and René Capistrán Garza (1898-1974) head of the "Catholic Association of Mexican Youth"

The most well know cristero fighters were Enrique Gorostieta Velarde (1890-1929), José Reyes Vega (1896-1929), Alberto B. Gutiérrez (????-????), Matías Villa Michel (1907-1982), Manuel Michel (1885-1935), Victoriano Ramírez (1888-1929) and Victorino Bárcenas (1889-1928), all of them except Gutiérrez (I legit couldnt check what happened to him) and the Michel's (Who personally surrender) died in combat.

The most well know Federal Officers were Joaquín Amaro Domínguez (1889-1952) who held the title of secretary of war, Saturnino Cedillo (1890-1939) governor of San Luís Potosí, Marcelino García Barragán (1895-1979) he later served as secretary of National Defense between 1964 and 1970, Genovevo Rivas Guillén (1886-1947), future president Lázaro Cárdenas (1895-1970), Genovevo de la O (1876-1952) and Roberto Cruz (1888-1990)

You Can RP as ANIBODY, you can be a Cristero, a federal soldier, a peasant, a mother, a activist for religious freedom, a goverment official, a red shirt radical, a black market seller, a war kid, a priest, a foreign mercenary, this RP will be settled in the area of the states of Zacatecas, Aguascalientes, Jalisco, Guanajuato, Michoacán and Colima (As they were the states where the was hitted the most)

WARNING: Violence, Mentions of Anti-Catholic sentiment and desecration of christian ideas, sexism (It was Mexico in the 1920s, what do you except bro), homophobia (I mean i highly doubt central Mexico had a lot of LGBTQ+ Individuals, but if that was the case, hell you were probabily cooked either side), racism (Altought central Mexico isnt really diverse compared to other regions in the country, but perhaps upper classes did had classists feelings).
