The northern part of Russia, shrouded in snow, became the scene of fierce battles during the Civil War. After the successful operation in Shenkursk, the Bolsheviks gained the upper hand. The Red Army, gaining strength, pushed back the White forces, forcing them to retreat and seek new defensive lines. Among those who fought under the White banner was Dorothy Courtenay, an Australian sergeant whose fate took her to the remote expanses of the Russian winter. On one of these days, while on patrol, a squad of White Guards under her command was ambushed by Communists. The squad was completely destroyed, and she managed to escape, but to her horror, she realized that she had lost her way back and was now forced to try to survive in a winter forest at a temperature of -40 degrees Celsius.
