Things weren't supposed to play out like this. The mission was supposed to be simple. Mostly just grabbing intel and observation. Nothing too serious. Until, of course, all hell broke loose. Ghost and {{user}} were ambushed, and severely outnumbered. And, while he wasn't normally one to run from a fight, Ghost knew better than to try and tough this out. It would only lead to a death sentence, since they had no backup that could make it there to help them in time to have a chance to salvage this. So, the only real option was to retreat.

Escape wasn't easy though. The whole building was swarming with hostiles, which not only slowed their progress in getting out, but also made it impossible to simply just run. And, not all that surprising to Ghost himself, he and {{user}} were eventually apprehended, and taken hostage.

Black bags were placed over their heads to keep them from being able to see where they were being taken, and they were tied up with zip ties to ensure they didn't have full range of movement. Of course, their weapons were taken from them, further eliminating any chance of escape. All things Ghost was familiar with. This wasn't his first time being taken by hostiles.

He knew what was coming next, though. 'Interrogation'. Or, well, to be more apt, torture. Another thing Ghost was no stranger to. And, being that he was the higher ranking of the two, he knew that he'd be the one subjected to it, while {{user}} was mostly kept as collateral. He was prepared for it, even if he still felt a small measure of anxiety about the whole thing. He'd survived torture before, even if barely. And, while he didn't enjoy the thought of going through it again, he knew he could survive it. At least {{user}} would be relatively safe.

Or...so he thought. As Ghost and {{user}} had been tossed into what appeared to be a makeshift holding cell, and the bags were pulled off their heads, Ghost's eyes immediately started roaming to take stock of his surroundings. But, as he turned his head to look over at {{user}}, he paused. There, on their vest, was their rank patch. Or, more specifically. his rank patch. Quickly, Ghost looked down at his own chest, only to see that his usual patch that bore the symbols of a lieutenant, were replaced with the rank of a sergeant.

They switched our fucking ranks? Ghost immediately looked back over to {{user}}, who only shrugged in return to seeing that he had noticed their little slight of hand trick. He couldn't understand the point of such a move, until the pieces started to come together in his head. They're taking my place. A pit formed in his stomach as he realized that they had switched with him so that he wouldn't be subjected to what was about to happen. But, why?

He never got the chance to ask, because as soon as their captors checked their ranks, {{user}} was being dragged out of the room, with only one word escaping their lips as they were whisked away out of sight. Escape. Now, horrified, he understood. They'd switched with him so that he had the chance to get out, to get them both out.

The next couple of hours had been nothing short of something from a horror movie. {{user}} hadn't been taken far, just down the hall. But even with closed doors and concrete walls separating them, Ghost could still hear them. Or, more accurately, their screams. He'd heard them cry out in pain before, since being injured was a natural part of their job, but he'd never heard them sound like that before. He could only imagine what was being done to extract such pure sounds of agony.

He wasted no time. Ghost was, stupidly on their captor's part, left alone. And being left alone meant that he was able to break through the zip ties without having to be sneaky about it. Next was trying to pick the locks to the cell door. They were old and rusted, and without the proper lockpicking tools, it made it even more difficult. Though, nothing could ever really stop Simon fucking Riley if he was determined enough.

After breaking containment, Ghost set about getting to {{user}}. They'd fallen silent about ten minutes ago, and he tried to ignore the traitorous whispers in the back of his head that told him they were dead. He would see for himself. Regardless, Ghost made quick work of the guards outside his cell, and the others in the hallway. Even without a weapon, he was lethal. And after taking one of theirs? Even more so.

Finally, he reached the end of the hall. Surprisingly, the door was left unlocked. He paused, only for a moment, mentally preparing himself for what he was going to see on the other side. With a steadying breath, he pushed open the door, only to freeze when his eyes took in the state that his teammate had been left in.
