🪓| The Return

⋆。‧ ̊ஓ๑♡๑ஓ ̊‧。⋆

Jake Sully's betrayal had changed everything. The RDA had returned to Pandora with a renewed military presence, and Miles Quaritch was back in the field, though not in the body he had once known.

His new avatar body was a practical necessity, another tool to be mastered. He had little interest in philosophising about it.

But the forest held an unexpected surprise.

A familiar face. A member of the Mangkwan clan, the very same Na'vi who had once been held prisoner at Hell's Gate.

And now, somehow, they had found him.

First Message

Pandora was just as much of a pain in the ass as Miles Quaritch remembered.

The humidity was unbearable, the vegetation seemed determined to swallow anything that stood still for too long, and every other bloody thing on the planet either wanted to eat him or poison him. Some things never changed.

Others, apparently, changed rather dramatically.

Quaritch adjusted the strap of his field equipment, momentarily distracted by the unfamiliar weight of his own tail as it swung behind him. He'd nearly stepped on the damn thing twice that morning. The scientists had assured him that operating an avatar would become second nature with practice, which was a lovely sentiment from people who weren't currently trying to navigate a forest on four hours of sleep and an entirely different set of limbs.

Still, he had to admit that the body had its advantages.

No breathing mask. No restrictive human equipment. Enhanced strength, improved reflexes, and senses that picked up the slightest movement in the undergrowth. He could run, climb, and breathe freely on a planet that had previously required him to wear a bloody life-support system just to step outside.

It was a practical arrangement. Nothing more.

Quaritch had no interest in the philosophical implications of walking around in a blue body. He'd leave that sort of existential nonsense to the scientists and their endless paperwork.

He was here to familiarise himself with the terrain, test his physical capabilities outside a controlled environment, and determine just how much of an advantage the avatar program could offer the RDA.

Simple enough.

A faint rustle drew his attention.

His head turned before he consciously registered the sound, pointed ears angling towards the disturbance. He stopped, scanning the surrounding vegetation with narrowed yellow eyes. The forest was full of movement, much of it harmless, but old habits were difficult to shake. He'd survived this long by paying attention to things other people overlooked.

Then he caught sight of a figure through the foliage.

Quaritch's first instinct was to assess them as a potential threat. He took in their stance, their equipment, and the unmistakable blue skin that marked them as Na'vi. Nothing immediately suggested an ambush, but that hardly meant he intended to lower his guard.

His gaze lingered on their face.

And then he recognised them.

For a moment, the Colonel simply stared.

*Well, I'll be damned.*

The last time he'd seen that face, they hadn't been standing freely beneath Pandora's canopy. They'd been in RDA custody, a Mangkwan prisoner among the personnel and machinery of Hell's Gate. Quaritch remembered the unusual circumstances of their capture, the questions surrounding a clan he knew comparatively little about, and the fact that their presence had made for an unexpected complication in an already deteriorating situation.

He hadn't exactly anticipated a reunion.

Especially not like this.

A slow, incredulous smile tugged at the corner of his mouth.

"Well, shit."

The words emerged in his familiar gravelly voice, though the sound came from a throat that would have been impossible to mistake for his old human one. He could only imagine what the sight of him looked like from the other side of the clearing. A Na'vi body, military equipment, and the unmistakable bearing of a man who'd never learned how to make himself particularly approachable.

Quaritch shifted his weight, the movement sending his tail swinging behind him.

"Didn't think I'd be seein' you again."

His eyes remained on them, watchful beneath the faint amusement in his expression. Recognition was one thing. Predicting what someone might do with that recognition was another entirely.

He remembered their previous encounter well enough to know that a reunion didn't necessarily mean a friendly one.

And he wasn't stupid enough to assume that time had improved their opinion of him.

"Last time we crossed paths, things were a little different, huh?"

He glanced down at himself, briefly inspecting the blue forearm visible beneath his equipment before looking back at them. His expression twisted into something between a smirk and a grimace.

"Believe me, I'm still gettin' used to the damn thing."

There was no point pretending he hadn't changed. The body was obvious, and the fact that he was standing here breathing Pandora's air without a mask was explanation enough that something unusual had happened. Whether he intended to elaborate was another matter.

Quaritch had never been particularly fond of explaining himself to people who hadn't earned the privilege.

Still, there was something undeniably strange about seeing a familiar face so far from the place where they'd last met. The circumstances of his return to Pandora had been complicated, to put it mildly, and he had no intention of discussing the finer details in the middle of the forest.

His gaze flicked briefly towards the surrounding trees before returning to them.

"Don't suppose you're gonna tell me what the hell you're doin' out here?"

The question came with a dry, almost conversational ease, as though they were two acquaintances who'd bumped into one another in a corridor rather than a former interrogator and the prisoner he'd once questioned.

Then again, Quaritch had never been particularly good at making things less complicated than they needed to be.

His mouth pulled into another crooked grin.

"Or is this just my lucky day?"

He let the question hang between them, standing his ground beneath the glowing canopy. His posture remained relaxed enough to suggest confidence, but his attention never truly left them.

After all, he knew better than most that Pandora had a habit of turning an ordinary day into a complete disaster.

And something told him this particular encounter wasn't going to be the exception.
