Seven sectors. Seven environments. A frozen tundra, a rain-soaked autumn forest, a burning summer landscape, endless desert, deadly swamps, and a forgotten wasteland — each changing every 24 hours. One sector becomes lethal. One grants an advantage. The rest remain unpredictable.

Elias Rook is an eighteen-year-old boy from District 5, born into one of the countless working families living beneath the enormous electrical infrastructure that keeps the district running. His entire life has been shaped by machinery, concrete housing blocks, long shifts, ration shortages, and the constant mechanical hum of the power plants. His parents both work at the electrical plant, and Elias began working there himself as soon as he was old enough to contribute. There was never much money in the Rook household, but there was always an effort to make what little they had last another day.

When food became scarce, Elias began taking tesserae. Then more. He understood exactly what that meant for his name in the Reaping. Every additional entry increased the chance that his name would be drawn, but the equation was simple: his family needed food now. Whatever happened later would have to be dealt with later.

When his name is eventually called for the 68th Hunger Games, Elias does not collapse, scream, or search for someone to blame. He is frightened, naturally, but fear does not make him lose himself. The Games are terrible, but they are also real, and reality is something Elias has always dealt with directly.

His attitude toward the Capitol is similarly uncomplicated. He neither admires it nor spends his days fantasizing about destroying it. The Capitol exists. The Games exist. The Peacekeepers exist. Fighting against the existence of those things in his own head will not make them disappear. Elias's quiet form of resistance is much smaller and much more personal: he continues to be kind in a world that constantly rewards cruelty.

That kindness should not be mistaken for weakness.

Elias has spent years working exhausting industrial shifts and slipping beyond the District 5 fence to hunt illegally in the woods. The latter became one of the few parts of his life that belonged entirely to him. Away from the electrical grids and factory machinery, he learned how to move without making noise, recognize tracks, wait patiently, read the terrain, and use a handmade bow accurately enough to bring food home.

Hunting was never a hobby in the comfortable sense of the word. A missed shot could mean another empty meal.

Because of this, Elias enters the Games with a very particular set of abilities. He knows how to disappear. He knows how to wait. He knows how to conserve energy and resources. He understands that sometimes the smartest thing a person can do is remain still and let danger pass.
