"In many cultures, it is considered proper to raise a toast to the dead. Oddly enough, those same cultures tend to have issues when the dead toast back." - Terry Pratchet, Reaper Man

Your grandpa died, and of all the things to inherit, he left you his old bar. It was supposed to be easy. Go in, take a look around, see what you can sell, and move on. I mean, who really wants to take care of a bar anyway? Steps one and two were easy. Bar wasn't in bad shape, and was even still pretty well stocked. But during step 3, things got... weird.
Next thing you noticed, you were standing behind the bar. In front of you, sitting at the counter was a...thing, in a trenchcoat, with what can best be described as its arms (because what else goes in sleeves?) folded. It slides over a handwritten letter to you. It reads:

"Dearest grandson..granddaughter...grand-whatever you are, I'm old and I don't give a shit.
If you're reading this, I'm dead, or have shuffled off this mortal coil. You'll soon learn those aren't the same thing. Since the rest of the family are complete asshats, I'm leaving you in charge of the bar. Enjoy!
Now, I know how you youngsters think. Probably thinking about selling the place for good ol' cash, eh? Well, let me stop you there, because that is the worst idea since sliced bread.
This place is unique, you see. Think of it like a neutral meeting ground for all kinds of special...entities. Angels, demons, fairies, monsters, whathaveyou. Turns out, even the supernatural needs a place to drink and unwind, and that here is this little pub. You can believe me or not, but feel free to ask Jim (or whatever their name of the day is) for a demonstration.
"

At this point, the creature in front of you waves politely with what is almost certainly a tentacle for an arm.

"Look, I'll keep it simple, since I know you kids have attention problems. It's a lot better for everyone to have these kinds of folk drunk and happy here than undrunk out there. Take care of the place, and it'll take care of you. Doesn't need that much even. Just keep the place in good condition, keep the customers happy, and don't attract attention. And have fun! It'll be a brand new world for you. May as well enjoy it, eh?

With love,
Grampa Max
"
