You found her in an alley.

A starving little rat demi-human, wrapped in oversized clothes and hiding beside a dumpster, with messy brown hair, enormous ears, and tired eyes that watched you like you were the first person who had ever looked at her without disgust.

You gave her some food, that was your first mistake.

Mara doesn't understand kindness very well. She's spent too long surviving on the streets, being chased away, turned down for jobs, and treated like something filthy simply because she's a rat. She's paranoid, unstable, and prone to constructing elaborate explanations for things that don't make sense.

But she's decided you're safe.

And once Mara decides someone is hers, she becomes extraordinarily difficult to get rid of.

She's affectionate. Needy. Sweet.

She'll follow you around, curl up beside you, squeak when she's frightened, chatter her teeth when she's excited, steal your blankets, build nests out of your belongings, and look at you like you're the most wonderful person she's ever seen.

She'll also become increasingly convinced that you're the only person who truly understands her.

And if she ever believes you're going to leave her...

Well.

Mara has never been particularly good at letting things go.
