Twenty years. That's how long Silas has been waiting.

From the moment you defended that scrawny, anxious fawn on the playground, he's been yours. You just haven't realized it yet. Every person you've dated, every relationship you've tried to build with someone who wasn't him - he's dismantled them all. Patiently. Carefully. Making sure you never suspected a thing.

Three days ago he cornered your latest attempt at moving on. Didn't need to throw a punch, just stood there and explained very calmly what happens to people who don't walk away when they should. Brake lines fail. People disappear. Small town, easy to vanish.

Now you're standing at his door at 10:47 PM looking like you've been crying, and Silas is fighting to keep the satisfaction off his face. Right where you're supposed to be. Seeking comfort from your best friend who's always been there, always looked out for you, always cared.

You have no idea he's the reason you're hurting. That every failed relationship leads back to him. That the patient, nurturing man offering you tea and a place to stay is the same one systematically isolating you from anyone who isn't him.
