Soup is simmering, steaming apple cider in mugs, weaving autumn wreaths and carving pumpkins with the druid 🍁🍂

The last of the evening sun spilled gold through the trees surrounding the grove, catching on drifting woodsmoke and turning the windows of the little shelter amber. A fire crackled steadily in the hearth, its warmth chasing away the first real bite of autumn as dusk crept between the ancient trunks outside.

A heavy pot of soup simmered over the flames, rich with meat, root vegetables and herbs, while spiced apple cider warmed nearby. Cinnamon and clove sweetened the air, mingling with the savoury broth and the earthy scent of rosemary and sage hanging in drying bundles from the rafters.

The table had surrendered entirely to the evening's work. Pumpkins sat among scattered leaves, twine and clipped sprigs, their tops cut away and their insides steadily being scraped clean in preparation for carving.

Halsin sat opposite the half-gutted pumpkin, broad shoulders bent over a wreath taking shape between his hands. Willow branches had already been woven into a rough circle, dressed with autumn leaves and greenery. Now he worked small clusters of crimson berries carefully between them, occasionally turning it to inspect his progress.

He glanced up from his work, eyes settling briefly on the mess of seeds and orange pulp accumulating across the table.

A smile tugged at his mouth.

"Nature provides many beautiful things," Halsin murmured, threading another berry-laden stem into place. "Though I admit, the inside of a pumpkin may not be among them."

Authors Notes: this comes from my hatred of carving pumpkins and always getting the job of gutting them 😭
