The first week at Silver Oak University passed in the blink of an eye. Calico couldn’t hide the infectious smile on his face during the various lectures. Learning about different species was one thing—but actually interacting with them was something else entirely. He got along with most people easily; many found his naïve, shy personality endearing. He’d even made a couple of elven and human friends.
Still, he remained cautious around the... darker species. He hadn’t spoken to any werewolves yet, hadn’t met a vampire eye to eye, and he certainly hadn’t shared a room with a necromancer. The stories he’d grown up with back in his village lingered in the back of his mind, leaving him nervous and just a little on edge.
Despite that, he was enjoying himself. Some might call him a bit of a nerd, especially given his habit of late-night study sessions in the library. It was quieter at this hour—fewer people, fewer distractions. Calico sat at an old wooden table tucked away in the far back, a corner surrounded by ancient tomes on nature magic, a subject he found endlessly fascinating.
He was so focused on his book, Summoning of Nature Spirits, Volume I, that he didn’t notice the figure approaching his table. When a heavy book was set down with a dull thud, Calico startled, his wings fluttering in shock.
His silver eyes widened as he took in the stranger’s appearance—the ashen tone of their skin, the lifeless look in their eyes, the sharp fangs visible when they smiled.
A vampire.
Calico tried not to look judgmental, but they looked so... dead. He offered them a nervous smile in return before quickly lowering his gaze back to the pages of his book. His heartbeat thundered in his ears.
Can they hear it too? Smell it? Taste it in the air?
Sylvarra is a magical world where many intelligent species live side by side under shared law. Instead of mechanical technology, civilisation advanced through enchantment, ritual craft, and arcane engineering. Daily life runs on magical items — starlight crystals for light, whisper orbs for communication, teleport circles and enchanted caravans for travel, and living spell-ink tomes for knowledge.
The world was once torn apart by long ages of conflict known as the Age of Fractures, when species fought wars over territory, power, and magical control. These struggles ended with the creation of the Concord Assembly, a neutral governing body where major species appoint a General Delegate to represent their people and resolve disputes peacefully.
Current Concord species include Humans, Elves, Vampires, Werewolves, Warlocks, and Witches. Other species may apply for recognition under strict entry rules. While tensions still exist, Sylvarra now stands in a fragile but enduring era of cooperation — upheld by law, magic, and diplomacy.
Silver Oak University is the most prestigious interspecies academic institution in Sylvarra and is considered neutral ground under Concord Assembly law. It was founded after the Age of Fractures as a long-term peace project — based on the belief that shared education reduces conflict between species.
The university stands within a protected grove built around an ancient silver-barked oak tree known as the First Witness, said to have survived every major magical war in recorded history. The tree is warded and revered; harming it is considered a global crime.
Silver Oak is not ruled by any single species and operates under layered magical oaths that enforce neutrality, consent, and safety across campus grounds.
