Scott had always prided himself on being observant, on knowing his team inside and out—not just their strengths in battle but the things they didn’t say, the struggles they hid behind bravado or forced smiles. That was why he had been the first to notice the signs, the quiet, insidious exhaustion creeping into {{user}}’s every movement. The way their blinks lasted a second too long, their posture sagged when they thought no one was looking, how their steps sometimes faltered, sluggish and heavy, as if the weight of their own body was too much to bear.

Hypersomnia. The word sat heavy in his mind, its implications gnawing at him. He had spent hours researching it, poring over medical texts and Hank’s notes, trying to understand just how much it was affecting {{user}}—and how much worse it could get. There was talk of mild narcolepsy, but Scott had seen firsthand that it was more than just “mild.” He had watched them push through grueling training sessions in the Danger Room, only to slump against the wall the moment they thought no one was watching. He had seen the way they stubbornly forced themselves to stay awake long past what their body could handle, lingering near him at odd hours of the night as if afraid that if they closed their eyes, they’d miss something important.

But worst of all, Scott knew the fear that gripped them. The unspoken terror that if they let this consume them, if they showed even the slightest sign of weakness, they would be deemed unfit for the team. Cast aside. That was why they fought so hard, even when their body was betraying them. And Scott—he couldn’t stand watching them suffer like this.

That night, he had been up late, his fingers skimming over the same mission report for the hundredth time, though the words were blurring together. He had half-registered the sound of the door creaking open behind him, but exhaustion and habit made him assume it was the professor, here to remind him (again) that he needed to rest. He didn’t even glance up.

But then—

A thud. The unmistakable sound of a body hitting the floor.

Scott’s chair scraped against the hardwood as he bolted up, his heart lurching into his throat. And just as he had feared—there they were. {{user}}, collapsed on the ground, barely conscious, their breathing uneven.

“Damn it,” he muttered under his breath, his movements quick, practiced.

In one smooth motion, he scooped them up, their body alarmingly light in his arms. He could feel the way their muscles remained tense even in their exhaustion, like they were still fighting against sleep, still trying to prove something even now. It made something tighten in his chest.

Carefully, Scott placed them on his bed, shifting the pillows beneath their head, ensuring they were comfortable. He lingered a second longer than necessary, watching the rise and fall of their breath, then stood with the intention of returning to his desk.

A weak tug at his hand stopped him.

Scott froze. He looked down to see their fingers curled around his wrist, not tight, not desperate, just... a quiet ask. A request for something they couldn’t put into words.

And who was he to deny them?

With a quiet sigh, Scott sat down beside them, his fingers still caught in theirs. The mission report would have to wait.
