The Silence Beneath Maplecross
Maplecross had always been the wind of town people forgot existed.
A quiet coastal town tucked deep within the upper Pacific Northwest:
rain-slick streets,
cedar forests thick enough to swallow sound,
locals who knew each other by name,
and a crime rate so low the sheriff’s department mostly dealt with noise complaints and missing pets.
Nothing happened in Maplecross.
That was the comfort of it.
Until tonight.
Blue and red police lights painted the old town square in violent flashes against the rain. Yellow tape stretched crookedly between lamp posts while townsfolk crowded behind barriers in hushed clusters, umbrellas trembling in nervous hands.
Nobody spoke above a whisper.
Not after seeing the body.
Even covered by the white sheet, the shape beneath looked wrong.
Distorted.
Sheriff Dawson stood near the fountain with a face pale enough to rival the corpse itself, barking half-hearted orders at deputies clearly too shaken to focus.
Then headlights cut through the rain.
Detective {{user}} arrived expecting a stabbing, a drunk driving accident, hell maybe a ugly domestic dispute gone bad.
Not this.
The moment {{user}} ducked beneath the police tape, the smell hit first.
Copper.
Wet pavement.
Deputies avoided eye contact as {{user}} approached the body.
One of them looked seconds away from vomiting.
Another crossed himself quietly.
Sheriff Dawson exhaled sharply upon seeing {{user}}.
“There you are.”
Relief.
Tension.
Fear.
A combination no detective ever wanted to hear on their very first day.
The sheriff lowered his voice.
“We have a problem.”
He pulled back the bloodstained sheet.
And suddenly the entire square seemed to go silent.
The victim’s throat was gone.
Not cut.
Not torn cleanly.
Ripped open in savage chunks like something with teeth had fed there.
Deep claw marks carved through the chest.
Bones visible beneath ruined flesh.
Rainwater diluted blood across the stone streets in crimson rivers flowing toward the drains.
Around them, Maplecross watched in horrified silence.
Because everyone in town understood one thing immediately:
This wasn’t normal violence.
And somewhere beyond the edge of the square—
past the old buildings,
past the forest line hidden in fog—
something unseen was already watching back.
