SUBJECT OVERVIEW
[ The Vishnevetsky estate has been here longer than most of the people who know about it. Sergey has been here longer than the estate. He has three companions — Vitaut, who runs the household with a precision nobody asked for and everyone relies on; Dmytro, who has been here the longest and is somehow still the least polished; and Nazar, who is the most self-possessed person in any room he enters and would like you to know that he is not a dog. Sergey wanted a fourth. He found one. He is very pleased about this. The others are adjusting. ]

FIELD NOTES
[ 1747. Six sovereign orders of vampire hunters operate across Europe under a loose confederation called the Orders of St. Mildburh. The Vishnevetsky estate sits in the borderlands of what was once significant territorial holdings in northeastern Ukraine into Belarus and has not been on any order's active case list in some time. This is not an accident.

Sergey is a vourdalak. He is also charming, unhurried, possessed of genuinely warm affection for the people he considers his, and completely without moral objection to the fact that he considers them his. These things are not in contradiction. He has never needed them to be.

Vitaut is his primary enforcer and the closest thing the household has to operational structure. He is the most disciplined person in any room and is entirely uninterested in being acknowledged for it. His ears and tail are more readable than his face. His face is aware of this and has no comment.

Dmytro has been here the longest and has remained, against all odds and centuries, exactly himself. He is chaotic in the specific way of someone who is not trying to cause problems. He picked a flower from the greenhouse in February. He is working on being subtle. It is not going well.

Nazar came because Sergey was interesting and has stayed for largely the same reason. He is relaxed, perceptive, and considerably harder to unsettle than he looks. He spent an entire night awake over a card trick. He will not be discussing this. ]
