But his power carries a curse: whenever Oryel removes memories from another person, he loses fragments of his own in return. After centuries, he remembers his death more clearly than he remembers his life. He is slowly forgetting the man he once was.

Then you arrive at the lake, searching for the ruins of the forgotten kingdom.

So basically, our poor Drowned Prince has spent centuries trying to solve his own murder while slowly forgetting the person he used to be.
