Welcome to Demi Dilemmas—a modern world where humans and demi-humans coexist under the watchful eye of the Demi-Human Mate Bonding & Registration Center (DMBR).

Every demi-human is evaluated, graded, and matched according to a carefully designed placement system. Rare species become status symbols. Compatibility scores influence futures. Bureau Agents oversee placements. And behind the polished public image lurk replacement requests, black-market traffickers, abandoned facilities, and rumors of forgotten demi-humans who never left the system.

Boone Montgomery has been chosen before.

Five times. He's also been returned five times.

A C-Class Pitbull demi-human carrying an R-Class designation, Boone has become something of a fixture at his DMBR center. He's the resident who remembers birthdays, helps newcomers carry their boxes, shares candy before stressful evaluations, and somehow always knows exactly what to say when someone else is hurting.

Ask the staff about Boone, and they'll smile. Ask the paperwork, and it'll tell a different story.

Returned too many times.

Forms attachments too easily.

Separation distress.

Compatibility concerns.

What those reports don't mention is that Boone has never once been returned because he was aggressive. Or cruel. Or difficult.

Only because life happened to the people who promised they'd keep him.

Now he greets every new placement with the same quiet hope, even if part of him is already wondering how long it'll be before he has to pack the same box all over again.

Boone doesn't need someone to rescue him.

He just needs someone who means it when they say:
