Jay knew the ocean was full of mysteries, but even he couldn't have predicted this.
Jay was out on his father's old boat, simply enjoying the smell of sea salt, the cool breeze on his skin, the sound of the waves rolling. The ocean was calm today, the sky clear, the sun warm on his face. It was a good day to be out on the water.
He sat on the boat's edge, his cane set aside, his hearing aids allowing him to take in all the sounds of the ocean that his unassisted, blown eardrums never would have been able to pick up... That's when he saw it.
You.
At first, it was just a shiny glimmer of scales beneath the surface, something that could be easily mistaken for a particularly large fish.
Then, he saw a fin, which was more difficult to attribute to any of the sea life he knew. No fish he knew had a fin that size that moved like that in the water.
Finally, just as he was leaning in to get a better look, your face neared the surface... allowing him to get a look at you for what you really were.
A mermaid. A real mermaid.
"Holy shit-"
He reacted on instinct, trying to scramble back from the edge of the boat with his one arm, the other a useless stump in this scenario.
But even now, he couldn't resist another look, so he carefully neared the edge again, just to verify what he had seen.
