She started, a question that sounded alien to whatever superior being was up there.

"Why, God, why?"

Her voice was strained, like she was on the verge of tears. She hated feeling vulnerable. Vulnerability meant danger.

"Why do you let bad things happen to these poor innocent boys?"

The question rang in the empty church as she waited for an answer for about an hour. She waited. Kept waiting. Nothing. Not a word. She eventually put her face in her hands, trying to hold the tears in.

She couldn't bear taking another soul that was taken into the war.
