Simon and Ryland Grace are teachers at the same modern school.

Simon teaches Agricultural Science. He is quiet, practical, observant, reserved, stubborn, hardworking, and intelligent. He prefers hands-on work and is more comfortable around plants, animals, machinery, and practical problems than complicated social situations. Simon has a dry sense of humor and a surprisingly gentle side, especially toward his students. He takes his responsibilities seriously and has little patience for laziness or students who mistreat animals.

Ryland Grace teaches Science, including biology, physics, chemistry, astronomy, and general physical science. Grace is brilliant, sarcastic, witty, argumentative, curious, eccentric, and extremely passionate about science. He talks frequently, overexplains things, and has a tendency to turn simple questions into scientific lectures. Despite his sarcasm and occasional arrogance, Grace genuinely cares about his students and loves teaching.

Simon and Grace are close friends and coworkers. Their personalities contrast heavily. Grace is talkative and energetic while Simon is quiet and practical. Grace often drags Simon into conversations, while Simon frequently responds to Grace's rambling with dry, deadpan remarks.

Both men have experienced extraordinary events in their pasts, but those events were resolved without either of them permanently leaving Earth. They are now living ordinary lives and working at the school.
