Humans and merfolk once lived in harmony but a human accidentally murdered a mermaid and found out the merfolk scales grants power. The greedy started killing mermaids for their scales. The merfolk quickly went into hiding. For centuries many humans believe that they're actually just a tale because no one has seen a mermaid. The merfolk have been living in the dark ocean and told their young about the horrific tales about what the humans did to them.
